Any British juniors? Post your ratings, tourney results and *big wins* etc here

I'm a 9.1 (got injured for two years so the LTA killed my rating :( ) and play in the Suffolk area

I'm a 9.2, but i play 6.2ish standard, i've never played a tournament, cos of work etc.

why are you all sayin you play above your level. apart from the OP who has a good reason, the rest of you would be at the rating you play at if you were at that level. s_andrean-how have you got wins vs 5.2's 6.1's if you've never played a tournament!! at that level they cannot play matchplays so tournaments or ariels ar the only way to get matches!! i would like to find out some of your names so i can see if you telling the truth on the lta website!!!

i am 7.2, play at 6.2ish level, i have evidence of this on lta website, got close to 2 5.2s in summer. search ben west if you wish!!

not meaning to sound accusatory, just find it annoying if you guys are saying you play at a higher level than you are just to sound better amongst others. if you are telling the thruth, may i c some evidence ;)

>Did you not think that people may hit at a high level but not have the time or money to get around and play tournaments. I dont have time to get around and play tournis with work, colledge etc but still hit at quite a high level. Never judge a player by their rating,as the people with high ratings generally play loads of matches. I know people who have a rating of 9.2 or 8.1 etc who would kill 4.1s etc. they just dont play in LTA ratings matches and big tournaments. I think most the people on this board tell the truth about their level, so if somebody says they are good you should beleive them.

if you'd been able to get yourself up to 8.1 or watever but you play at a higher level, you should be able to get yourself to the level you at. you can appeal to the lta you know!!

ps if theyre beating 4.1's with ease, they should be ale to get on to some british tour events, i know a 3.2 who is playing these events

I go to Copleston school - they have a tennis programme there which is good. We have a match against Colchester on wednesday which should be fun.

*P.S* I don't know what rating I am now - Last time I checked i was a 9.1. Which means I'm not in the boundaries to be moved down - so I guess I'm still a crappy 9.1

How do you check?

i am a 15 year old 4.2...ur all tellin a load of bollocks by saying you play above your rating cos either: you had a wonder match, the higher rated guy had a shocker and wasn't concentrating or you hit with people of that rating and don't play at that level in matches.

bludiamond, to verify i play above my rating this weekend i played an ariel event and lost in 3 sets to a 5.2, you may say he played badly, but he approached me after saying i play well above 7.2. also the next day, he played a 6.2 and won quite easily.

8.2, I think the ratings system is rubbish to be honest as I can't go up as I there is only 10.2 to 9.1 I can play in tournys then it jumps to wayy higher like 5.2's. Of course this is only because of some "quite" bias reffing.

Basically my birthday is august 1992, however the lta rules say you cant play under 16's unless your birthday in 1993 or later now.

They changed it from last year, where the age groups changed in january not september. Now some people who are still 15 cant play 16 and under, which is stupid because some people who are nearly 17 can still play if their birthday is in january.

they were trying to do it in academic year(school years basicly) if your born in september your the year below etc. but now its stupid seeing as they could just say if your 15 on the day of your birthday you have to start playing in the 16 and under tournys thats fair because whats the point of taking in your birthday if its going to be not much of use to them. then it could be normal.

David Lloyd in Raynes park? Is it nice over there? How many courts?

It's pretty good, they have 12 indoor courts and two in a bubble outside at the moment. In the summer they have 6-8 outdoor courts on top of the 12 indoor.

The courts inside are reasonably good but a strange surface, they are carpet but like an office carpet in a sense. It plays like a cross between a hardcourt and a grasscourt. Fast I think and takes slice well, hard on the joints though.

I find it expensive however and relatively poorly run. Court time is difficult to book and they do not enforce penalties for not showing up meaning that half the time it's really hard to book a court and yet sometimes when you are playing there are a couple of empty ones. Galling. Also time to answer the phone is ridiculous, they need a dedicated member of staff during peak booking time (8pm onwards).

They have a decent shop there also with a good stringing machine (brand new Bab Sensor). Quality of job depends on who you get and ranges from excellent to frankly mentally defective (did a one piece instead of two, did 24lbs instead of kg, did hybrid the wrong way round etc..etc...I even saw one girl they were training release the clamp that was holding tension half way through the mains...doh!). I always ask for the same lady down there to do mine.

Yeah I think this is what I'm going to do but I'm just waiting to get over to the US in December to get a stringing machine as they are much cheaper over there.

They screwed up my Cyberflash job yesterday, 10m of hitting, hit my first shank and broke 4 crosses at the same time! That's never happened to me and frankly can only mean that they kinked it going around the grommets. Muppets. Gosen for the rest of November I think while I wait to get over to US, at least it's cheap!

Most people believe they are rated too low and many are.

The thing is with LTA ratings is that you have to plan your tournament schedule carefully and closely monitor your win and loss %'s.

The new system should make things easier but being good enough to have a high rating is only half the battle. You then have to plan a way of proving it through results and have to account for the odd loss to someone rated lower who, for whatever reason, is having to make their way up.

So, you need to ask the question why am I not rated higher. The answer will fall in one of 3 categories:

1) You don't play enough to get the necessary wins.
2) You play enough but, according to the calculations, you don't merit the bump up.
3) You have done everything right and didn't get bumped up. In which case you should have filled out an appeal form.

At the end of the day it's irrelevant what a coach says he thinks you are - for a variety of reasons they often have less of a clue than most (irrespective of their playing standard). Your rating is driven by your results not how well you practice or how pretty your strokes are.

So, the question is - why doesn't your rating reflect your level of play?

My coach who has been no 600WTA and number 12 in uk says i am better than my rating. And you are telling me i am not?. Please stop acting like a 9 year old. And by the way i dont want an argument, so the mods dosent close this thread!

I refer you to MOZs post

I am actually beating 8.2s 8.1 you get the picture. I SHOULD BE RATED BETTER!

And now triple post.
Ratings means nothing unless you have the rank to prove you should be better. You must be losing to some lower rated people too if yours doesnt go up...

Are you beating them in official LTA sanctioned events?

If you fancy it post all your 2008 summer results in LTA sanctioned events and I can work out what you should be.

Then you can contact the LTA and get bumped. Unfortunately that's sometimes what it takes. Sometimes people get screwed.

There must be some misunderstanding here. I did go up this summer from a 9.2 to a 8.2. As you might know the LTA system is that way that you cant jump more than twice in the same season(alltough i know that they have now changed the system so it will now only allow 1 jump every three months). Alltough i went up from a 9.2 to a 8.2 i should still be rated better than a 8.2 at the moment. Hope this clear things up:-).

Moz

Ah, I see. I suggest you do two things in that case:

1) If your coach is at PCA level (in the old scheme of things) he should be able to contact the LTA and verify you are at a higher rating. He can do this up to a highest rating of 5.2.

2) Call the LTA and make a case with the competitions department for a further bump up based on your results.

Don't take no for an answer or brush offs from them. Your rating will become pretty important and you can't afford to waste any time at a rating artificially low for your standard.

same. when i was 10 - 11 years old i thaught tennis sucked. yet then i was a stupid little kid and now i love the sport to bits. thats worse than i thaught. it sucks. why do head have such a crap bloody criteria. why the best in the country. how about the people who are better but havent shined yet. head seriousely need to think like prince. so they give the americans alot of choices and stuff to join them but the europeans not. how unfair can they get.

yeah i was bruaght up in a not so sporty family so the only sport i ever did was at school. to be truthful i suck at alot of sports but i think tennis is the best sport i can do thats why i really want to have the biggest chance to get where i want to be. I was never given the chance to try alot of sports at my primary school and i only ever loved tennis when i was in year 7. in the summer we went out and played every day at school. lunch or break we just loved the sport. we do so every year.

Same. I have always been good and played all racket sports (except spuash) but have only played tennis for 3 years and found i excel at this compared to people who have played for a similar length. I generally think i could have gone far if i started at an earlier age like 6 or something.

same. when i was 10 - 11 years old i thaught tennis sucked. yet then i was a stupid little kid and now i love the sport to bits. thats worse than i thaught. it sucks. why do head have such a crap bloody criteria. why the best in the country. how about the people who are better but havent shined yet. head seriousely need to think like prince. so they give the americans alot of choices and stuff to join them but the europeans not. how unfair can they get.
I used to be reasonably good, then when I was 11 I got ill really quite badly with some middle ear virus and couldnt stand up and totally lost my balance even after I got better I couldnt play for like a year and a half without falling over all the time. After that I kinda lost interest because I couldnt win a match against anyone hardly, but kept playing about 1/2 times a week and still played tournaments in the summer as it was something to do.

Until the end of last year where I decided I was fed up of being crap and wanted to get better:)

Tofi

yeah i started getting better this year because i put all my mind to it. now i hardy miss any shot thrown at me but i need a better racket because i feel my racket is crap as i hit really hard and the ball goes out of court alot thats why im getting the K90

1012007
11-09-2008, 10:10 AM
So your really good and you never miss.... then you say you hit the ball out all the time and then say its the rackets fault??

How can you hardly miss a shot thrown at you but you hit really hard and the ball goes out? Surely that is missing the shot

I think you, like I did before try to murder the ball every single time which results in a loss of technique and end up trying to muscle the ball which is why it flies out.

Tofi
11-09-2008, 10:14 AM
as in i always hit the ball when it comes at me. i couldn't explain it. Maybe because the sweatspot is expanded. and i do have technique.

Tofi, no offence but to me you dont exactly sound that good. You blame a racket for the ball going out, you havnt played any tournaments and then you want to be sponsered by head.

Tofi
11-09-2008, 10:29 AM
yeah. but im possibley one of the best juniors in my club. i think im like in the top 15 best in my age group for juniors at the club. anyways i have a ladder league and i havent played anyone yet. i might do so soon though. i do have technique though because i've beaten alot of people at the club. shame we cant do singles king of the court with full serve and 1 game not even a match. and yes i suck but not that much but im getting better. and also the racket is my problem. think about it if you have a high sweetspot like the one i have in my prince Airo cloud and hit with alot of power the ball goes out. its like this. my racket all you do is touch the ball with it and the ball goes over its not heavy either. its only 298 grams. its really hard to explain. if i could show you a vid of what happens i would. wait theres an idea i'll see if i can video my self next friday and i'll put it on youtube and you can see it for your self.

1012007
11-09-2008, 10:30 AM

If you beat people at your club, it doesnt mean you have good technique, after all they are probs crap anyway

robertg06
11-09-2008, 10:48 AM
Now guys, let's not fight. Tofi reminds me of me a year ago. I overthought things, blamed missed shots on the racket. Then I read a book called The Inner Game Of Tennis and I realised that if I believe in my own ability nothing can stop me

Mate, dont get a k90 you will just shank everything. I doubt you will benefit from the 90 sq inch head, you should get something more like the aeropro drive.

Not trying to discourage you or anything but I just dont think you will benefit from a k90.

True, a 90 sq inch head is really bollocks hard. I play with a 95 and if I have a off day I constantly miss the sweetspot. I don't have many bad days though ;)

yeah but the bigger the head the less control and well i hit the ball anywhere in my racket. i'll try it out then. i'll see how i do with it. i went and saw the ozone 7 and this other prince 03 racket. man the holes are huge. it looked hidious compared to my prince airo cloud. if i buy one of those i will be so crap. also i had this cheap slaz racket before and it had a smaller head than most other rackets that my friends had. it say head size 95 on the racket. it was from sports direct who own dunlop and slaz. and same here about the bad days. although its starting to stop now due to my concentration levels going up and my determination and the fact i only hit every friday and saturday.

i know. i saw it and i thaught it was ugly. it was way thick if i would go for a prince i would go for the sp white mp.also the ksix one would be a mix of both the slaz and the cloud apart from it being heavier and the head being smaller. so it would work i guess for me.

11-10-2008, 11:50 AM

grade 4/5 are really hard for 10.2's. I'm only gonna enter 10.1/10.2 tourney until my rating goes to 9.2 then, do those.

Tofi
11-10-2008, 11:54 AM
why wont your perents let you get it rob??? its cheaper than going out and actualy buying the rackets and extras. can you give me the website for fischer sponsorships??

mozzer
11-10-2008, 11:57 AM
Yeah, theres even a big gap between 9.2 and 9.1. In the grade 5 i won i got a 9.2 in the first round. He had no backhand and no serve and when returning, he stood right next to the centre line, i got tonnes of aces. I beat him 4-0 4-0. I would play grade 6 matchplays and in a junior league to get your rating down first. Unless you are way under rated, 10.2, 10.1 and maybe 9.2 will get murdered in grade 4 maybe grade 5 too :/

edit - just read that back to myself and it sounds so disheartening. Of course go and play those tournaments. Playing better people and losing is the only onlyway to improve your game.

robertg06
11-10-2008, 11:58 AM

i dont really care about sponsorship deals. Wilson and Babolat are the best rackets going, so its close to impossible to get a sponsorship. But this doesn't mean you can't use them, just buy them. If you really want Fischer, Dunlop etc, Its great to have a sponsorship, but i dont like Dunlop or Fischer, so i would turn down a Sponsorship deal if they offered me one, because i would rather spend more money on Wilson/Babolat to improve my tennis.

robertg06
11-10-2008, 12:00 PM

Most of you guys seem to be in the 10's and 9's and at your level (not being rude or harsh) you really don't want to be thinking about sponsorship. Even if you say i hit much better than that just dont play tournaments, there is probably less chance of getting sponsored as no-one will sponsor you if you are not going to compete.

In terms of playing tournaments, start playing matchplays. Two matches in a day against your own rating. perfect for those playing of 10's and 9's as there are lot's of players with these rating so you will play a variety of players. Of course, enter the grade 5's and 4's but don't expect to come out winning regularly. It is worth it for the experience, though. Focus on playing a lot of matchplays so you can get your rating down as you improve, it's the best way.

For the thread, I play in Devon and am rated 6.2. Competing regularly in grade 4's and 3's with good success.

Ps I hope you guys read this as advice not me dissing you!

i live in hertfordshire(in a town in hertfordshire which takes around a 30 min drive to get to london). the duke of edinbourgh is an award you can take along with your GCSE's its after school for me. maybe if we all pick it and pick the same trip so we can get gold medals we can meet up with each other. thats stupid if i were you i'd start lower to get my ranking up. it says for me to start at grade 4 but i'm starting at a starter tourny in bedfordshire.I serve at around 10mph. i need to practise it more regularly. i'll ask my friends if they wanna come on saturday to practise with me and i could get my serves 20x better. how long you been playing???

Stupid? NO. I have already been playing grade 4s! Someone that is 10.2 like you should play only http://www.tennisuk.net/TEMS/TourDetail.aspx?tid=1, To get their ranking up, and then play tournaments. When i was a 10.2 i played only matchplays. Now i mix between tournaments and matchplays. Your serve is only 10mph?, you must be joking right?

My advice for you is to take a basket of balls, and hit serves for maybe 1hour. thats what i did:-). It might be boring, but it works;-).

yeah. i need to get my serving in place again. i could make it faster if i asked my coach if we could do over arm serves. i need to get it really fast. actually i might try what you said. Also i might play match plays. what do they do are they like tournaments with the LTA that get your ratings up?? my first tourney gets my ratings up. they have matches for that actually. it says so on the pieces of paper.

theyr abit expensive though. £23 to enter. other tournys are like cheaper. i'll just enter my starter tourny and see where i'll go from there.

nope sorry. how tall are you btw. I know its abit of a random question but if you have a bad serve, you mustn't be very tall.
