Just wondering if anyone's heard of him. He's in his 60's and he lives across the street from me. He's number 1 or up there in his age in the world (don't know how much it takes to do that when your over 60). Just seeing if anyone's ever heard of him.

If you have a look on the USPTA website there are a number of short tennis tip videos and several of them feature Jim Parker.

Jim was All American at Rice University. He was on the same team as Mike Estep and Harold Solomon. He taught Richey Renenberg and numerous other pros.

Was Jim the guy in silhouette on the Converse Jack Purcell box? Sure seems like I hit with his daughter in '82 or so when she was in the 14's.

Parker was a big, strong brother. Played right field for the Pittsburgh Pirates in the late seventies. Famous for throwing a guy out at home from deep rightcenter ... without a bounce.

No, that's Tobey Parker. And he's not a tennis player. He's a reporter for the Daily Planet.

Jim Parker? You bet. He lost a bunch of years because he was a fighter pilot but I remember him in the early 70s. He was really good and I recall that he was highly ranked even though he was past his prime. Jim was physically one of the strongest players around if I remember correctly.

Parker was a pen in the neck. I once asked him for his autograph--he said "up yours, Charlie" and then flipped me 'The Bird'.

Former husband of noted household name baker Jane Parker of A & P Supermarket chain fame. Her husband claimed that as far as 'pies' went, she sucked at baking cherry pies, but she could sure make his banana cream.

I assume he was the Jim Parker who the coach at Rice. My dad knew him when he coached at the Air Force Academy and they played Rice. Unfortunately, he had quit by my sophmore year when I tried out for the team there - he would have given me a more fair shake, I think - instead of making me try out when I could barely walk. I played with him in doubles one tiime.

I saw him play at a national level clay court tournament in the 60's division last year. He just totally embarrassed his opponents and he was playing against some good players. About once every other game he would serve underhand. The ball would land about 5 feet pass the net and kick at a 90 degree angle off the court. I didn't see anyone putting that ball in play. He was winning his matches something like 6-0, 6-1.

He is a tennis icon here in Houston and a great teaching pro. Great player. I remember watching him work out with Richey Renenberg all the time on that front rubico court at HRC. I used to see him playing out at Houston Racquet Club during my junior days. Great form, consistency, strategy and fitness in particular!
