View Full Version : Stiffness

I am trying to understand all the characteristics of different racquets.
What puzzles me is the rating for stiffness.
I've read the racquet facts in the learning center, but there is no mention on what # is considered the middle.
I currently have a racquet that has 73 in stiffness. Is this more on the stiff or flexible side?

Over 70 is considered stiff, under 60 is quite flexible by modern standards. Most models these days are somewhere in the 60's.

Stiffness is relative as well. In prior posts, I think I remember reading that stiffness is measured at some point on the racquet around the throat area. But a racquet can be stiff in the head and flexible in the throat and play a lot stiffer than the stiffness rating. And vice a versa, i.e. have high stiffness rating but a very flexible head and play much more flexible than the rating would indicate.
Are my memories correct on this one?

73 is on the very stiff side of the scale. If it is a widebody frame with a constant beam width, it is probably stiff at the tip of the hoop also.
