I have not played doubles since high school and do not remember the universal signs when playing. Does a closed fist mean stay and open hand means poach?

the best way is to talk be4 the point instead of signals

I don't remember any signals being universal. I just work them out with my partner before the match if we even use them. The signals I really like are when the net person tips the server off on where to place the serve. If your accuracy is good enough, this can be like a pitcher and catcher planning how to deal with a hitter--or a heavy returner in this case.
It's probably easiest to just talk before points, but signals can be imposing for receiving teams and give them more to worry about. Jedi mind tricks for doubles in the 21st century!
