Up until now I haven't had my own stringing machine so I've just used hybrids for string longevity. I'm going to get a nice assortment of strings to sample what is out here now (I'm returning to the game from 13yrs or so absence).

What do you recommend I try for:

1. Synthetic Gut - affordable/cheap
2. Synthetic Gut - premium (like Prince Premiere? God I'm old)
2. Poly
3. Hybrid for performance/playability
4. Hybrid for endurance/longevity
5. Hybrid that might satisfy both 3&4 above

Synthetic Gut--Prince Syn w/Duraflex, although Gamma Syn with Wearguard is a close 2nd

Premium Synthetic (multi)--Alpha Sphere. easy on the arm, unique feel with good control.

Poly--Signum Poly Pro Plasma, but I have yet to try the Luxilons. Prince Polygut for a less expensive poly, but I heard this is being discontinued.

Hybrid (perf)--Klip Legend(m)/TNT Fat Core or Head Fibergel Power (C)

Hybrid (dur)--Luxilon 5 Star(M)/Babolat Pro Hurricant (c)

Hybrid (both)--SPPP(m)/ Prince Synthetic w/Duraflex (c)

I would recommend taking a look at stringforum.net. The 2006 String Survey (http://www.stringforum.net/string2006.php) should give you a good idea of what kind of strings are worthy, especially evident among the polyesters.

As for hybrids, Steve Huff has some sound advice. Gosen OG Micro is an excellent string to have around as a cross string; gut, polyester, and multifilament mains all work very well with OG Micro. IMO, the best cost to performance can be achieved through hybriding gut with syn gut, and a great way to make a poly stringbed more playable and springy is through a similar hybrid.
