on a toss, i see that pros toss it in front of them way far. why do they do that and how do they get so much spin if the toss is so far in front

So they can explode into the ball more, more jump. Hope this helps.

why do they do that?? To hit faster serves.

How do they get so much spin?? They still brush the ball with enormous swing speed.

By tossing into the court, you maximize the momentum of your serve by increasing the mass of the stroke. That is, you are adding your body mass (to a degree) by leaning into the serve adding to the overall mass of stroke.

The problem for most recreational players is that when they toss farther out in front of them, they 'chase' the serve by opening up the shoulder plane too early which prevents vertually any swing path that could produce desirable spin. They are forced to hit flat--otherwise they would pull the ball way wide with their body facing the net. (IF the are trying to hit any slice or hybrid swing.)

Make sure you lean in over your toss shoulder so that you can attack the ball with the racquet moving across the ball. This will give you the spin you need (assuming you are brushing over the correct part of the ball!), yet maximize your body weight adding to the swing speed. (Momentum = Mass X Velocity)

Also, pushing up with the legs allow you to explode into the ball adding to this equation as well.

However, too many players use the legs in the wrong sequence or balance, ending up losing speed. Take some lessons or look at the video clips of pros and then video tape yourself...to see how you are doing in emulating the pro swings you see.
