When i try to power a down-the-line backhand slice it looks great heading over the net and then enters the evil left hook force field and changes orbit and heads out.
I am going to set up my ball machine tomorrow and try to sort it out. But wanted your input.
Maybe I need a new racquet? (joke) :)

Sounds like something caused by your racket not going strictly downward at contact.
Try taking your slice shots higher, before your racket starts to move from left to right.

It is the wind. Play indoor to see what really happens.
Also, you are probly cutting the ball left to right. Hit the ball straight through. Hit your slice cross-court and see what happens. If this projectile is messed up then you have a problem. If not then you are just doing somthing different when you slice the ball down-the-line.

There is a good article in Tennis.com about the slice backhand. It show how to increase control by cupping the outside of the ball during the slice. When I am able to focus and cup the ball on the outside, I get good results. Here is the link:

If you are right handed and your slice is hooking to the left -- you are at some point hitting an inside out slice which by the way is a great stroke - Sampras used it a lot for approach shots that tail away.
I was always taught to hit the outer edge of the ball on a slice and through. If I want that inside out slice, I make contact closer to the inside edge of the ball.
