View Full Version : How far up the grip for a 2HBH

I noticed for the first time something on the telly yesterday about Roddick in that he seemed to hold his 2hbh further up the racket than I expected. Maybe this is old news to others, but I had to look at some pics and had a quick search.

The 2HBH (both hands) seems choked up noticeably when compared to his FH, which suggests that he turns the racket AND moves his right hand up/down a distance as well. I was wondering how common this is for other players, pro and amateur.

Not that anyone seems bothered, but I decided to choke up the grip this week.

One improved 2HBH now in my possession. 8-)

Two advantage to not choking up:

1. You have more racquet length, and therefore the head of the racquet is moving faster when you hit the ball, and therefore you have more power and more speed on your backhand.

2. It is slightly easier to reach wide balls.

I'd say if you're choking up a lot (and I mean a lot) you should probably go for a shorter racquet.

Find the balance that is right for you.

I actually take my pinky off the buttcap. Choking up doesn't make any sense??

You must reach further
Have less head speed
Encourages "wristing" the ball, such as what Andy does.

Roddick doesn't use a classic two handed swing. It's more of a POP by snapping his wrists AND he doesn't really put his HIPS into the shot. Nalbandian or Safin are better examples of a 2H BH and have better results because of that. I wouldn't copy Roddick's BH anyway; the serve though is a different story!

For any stroke, choking up is not a solution for a poor stroke.
It may give a short term advantage, but doesn't help your game in the long run.
It would be better to try to learn sound mechanics, instead.
