I know this varies with how much topspin you use, but I really like hitting with only a foot or two of net clearance when really swinging out, even though I do hit with great topspin.

Post your net clearance range here.

anywhere from inches to about 2 feet...im a pretty flat hitter, but look to hit topspin shots when lacking consistency

Well, there are a lot of variables here to consider. However, the answer might/probably is where are your shots landing? Many who hit with a lot of top have there shots landing around/in front of the service line. If thats the case, why not give yourself more room for error and keep the ball higher and get the ball deeper.

For doubles play, there are other considerations but I'm assuming your playing singles and your opponent is playing from around their baseline - like most things in life, there is no single, simple answer.

I get what your saying but it is way more important how close to the baseline the ball lands than how far over the net it clears (unless he is at the net).

in baseline rallies you should get used to hitting through zone 2 (give or take 2 feet above the net) but adjust your power + spin to keep the ball deep and beyond the service line. That trains you not to miss a single ball.

this is the instruction that is given to majority of D1 tennis teams.

I try to clear the net by at least 20 feet on my biggest swings from the baseline.

I very seldom hit the net..
My net clerance? Depends on what shot I get at me. With a full western forehand I just puts topspin, depth and pace to my shots. My tactic depends on the opponent, of course - But those mentioned are general rules for a tennis player that are above the level of getting bagled by a pusher..

I don't care as long as it goes deep. I almost never have the problem of hitting the net unless I'm really on the run.

My reverse forehand when sprinting has like 10 feet of net clearance though o_O. A true topspin lob.
