Was playing last night with a highschool kid.
He's 14, school/tourny player.
I am 29, weekend warrior, casual player. Your average guy.
He beat me in 2 sets, 6-1, 6-4.
Funny thing is i am neither surprised nor my pride abused.
Anyone can agree that a highschool kid playing everyday, even 14, will kill your regular adult weekend average tennis player?

unless it is the year 2000 and the kid is called rafael nadal i am sorry i would go into hiding and change my name to Silvia Hernández Enríquez.
what is your weight/height by the way.

My name is now Armono Georgia Cortez. Si?
I am not a chinese male 29 years old and 5'6", 65 KG. I have not been playing for the past 1.5 years.
My opponent was not a 14 years old and about 5"3", skinny highschool kid. He was not a consistent player with moderate strength, but enough to put away a ball.

i feel awkward if i don't play tennis for more than 5 days, 1.5 years is where your problem lies. first i thought you being overweight was a factor. How wrong i was because i thought you weighed 100KG.

of course he might have a good chance of beeting you , 1.5 years is a long time out from tennis .. plus you seem more like a recreational player while he's the type of player that trains daily probably with a coach so he improves way faster than you do ..
so yeah i think that is not that strange that he beat you ....

Ah, you thought I was a fat overweight megaton ultra energy-storing beer belly buddy-ball obese oily fat a$$?
No no, I am ok. I think the problem is more of the consistency and moving in position to hit the ball at a full arm length. A lot of shots he made put me in an awkward situation.
I know how to hit the ball, but if i cant get into the right position, then all the standard strokes i learnt cant be applied, no?

Do you use a modern baseline-basher stroke or old school strokes? If the latter, I am totally not suprised with your result, as the game has passed you by. If the former, I would be having a bit of wounded pride... But that is just me, YMMV.

depends on what you consider your average weekend tennis player. If that player is a 3.0/weak 3.5 yeah he will get beat. I play 2-3 times a week and I have beaten the 3 high school kids I have played so far all 16-18 years old.

Actually I think old school matches up very well against your average baseline bashing high school player. Slice and net game is very effective against these players in my experience.

You people are misunderstanding what he said. He was giving you his statistics, but adding "not" because he changed his name. Ie: He hasn't been away from the game for 1.5 years, he's only been playing for 1.5 years.
At least, that is my interpretation. What say you, Armono Georgia Cortez, who is not a 29 year old asian male?

well theres this park player that beats me all the time. i think in sets won-lost, i am 2-10 against him. he plays like four times a week compared to twice for me, im 130 he's like 160 and bout an inch taller at 5'8, older than my be like 15 years. i have better form but he's very consistent and fast for someone of his stature and age. and well he slices alot and thats a very high percentage shot.

Absolutely ! This is no big deal though, you won't be the last man he beats. Firstly, if he's a large fit 14 yr old he may have bigger weapons than you but even little young primary school tournament players can beat many casual adults. My young bloke was beating casual men players at 9. You have to remember some of these kids, especially 14 yr olds may have 6 or 7 intense tennis years. Good adult players know how to draw errors from them but casual players will get frustrated and get beaten on their own errors. Adult ego's often are the cause of a loss. Eg: "This kids 5 foot tall so I'll just serve him off the court". My young bloke loves pace but struggles more with changes of pace and angles. He's beaten handy men players simply because they want to hit aces and winners. At the end of the day you should be playing the ball on it's merits.....that's what counts.

I agree they can be. But if I had been out of the game for 1 1/2 years, taking high looping, super topspinning, shots early with slices would be very timing dependant and in my experience, timing is one of the last things to come back after a long lay off.

Yeah, I lost to a kid last week in doubles. 17 year old German who is going to play #1 for the local high school here. Last time I played him, he was 3.5 at best but just a few months later and he was in 4.0 territory. His partner was a 4.5 and my partner was a 4.0 and we lost miserably starting out by being nice to the little German kid but then realizing we needed to attack him. The score was a 6-3, 6-1 loss but then we played another set for fun and won that 6-3.
The kid vollied well and had quicker hands at net than us 36 and 40 year old guys. We needed to lob or really hit hard at him but we did neither until it was too late. He was consistent and could finish short balls. We missed too many vollies or popped them up early in the match. His 4.5 was very, very steady too so points were fairly long and usually ended with us missing a volley on one of their passing shots.

That's interesting. In my experience HS stars often play much poorer doubles that you would think based on their strokes because of less exposure to the game. Usually the story I report is some 4.0 and 4.5 HS singles players getting their clock cleaned by some retired 3.5 and 4.0s, that they didn't initally take seriously.

no adult should lose to a 14 year old unless
1. this is "prince of tennis" and the player was Ryoma Echizen who would use his
Buggy Whip Shot and Tokyo slam move on you
2. he/she is top10 itf junior

Yeah, I expected to win too and took him lightly to start, but then his 4.5 partner was whipping up on us (winning 75% or more of his points) and the younger kid was winning almost half of his points too like maybe 40% or more.
He has been playing alot with college kids in the last couple months so his game seems to be improving alot from all the high level experiences and from playing in this doubles league. He did knock off the #1 kid at his large high school, so he is no slouch either but last time we played him in doubles it was pretty easy for us but he had a weaker partner then too.

Well screw you. If you played him you would have lost too. When I send the ball to his BH, he kept on looking like he was gonna blast it back, and then he would slice the ball and it would land in front of the net. And the floor of the court was pretty bad near the net or something, cause the ball just rolled towards the net after that. We had to count the point anyhow and I was pretty frustrated.
And he was so good that he put me in positions where all my shots just had to be fired back towards him. At times in the game he barely even moves his feet.
When he puts away winners, it always comes back twice as hard. Kid these days with theior powerful racquets and whatever, always smashing the ball.
So yah, you keep talking. I wish you could play him yourself so you'd keep your mouth shut :P

there is nothing wrong with losing to young kids...its a fun sport...and for not playing for a year and a half you did get a 6-4,and thats a close set. Im easily a 4.5 player, Im 25, and Ive had my shares of losses to highschool kids, when Im unpracticed at least. I remember losing 4 straight sets to the same highschool counterpuncher, alot of times I focus on getting my game back and not on winning. I remember playing an aggressive highschool player,he beat me the first set 6-3, and the moment I picked up my play in the next set he couldnt even get a game off me. I can play at the 5.0 level people. and thats not bullcrap!!! I recently took a break from the game because of my carreer in music and I lost to a little freshman in HS, I was up 4-1 and the moment he started just chipping crap at me I errored the match to where he won 6-4..When I asked for a second set he said he had to go,its alright, that can always happen... at the same time when I get my timing down, which can take 4 weeks if I havent played in 2 months, I usually will beat anyone under 4.5 pretty easily. I remember playing a tournament when I was 16,I played a kid who was 9, I beat him 6-3,6-0,but for a nine year old he was killer...at 16 I was easily 4.5.....So yeah, dont sweat it, just play the game and always feel like you can get better

I've seen some very talented kids. There's one at my club whose father was a pro. He is 8 y.o. He's under 5' tall. He can push back almost anything.
He can even serve!
Think of losing to these kids as investing in the future of the game.
Doesn't that make you fell better now?

I have been working out some a witha 14 yr old, who is #1 in his State, he is a strong 4.0-4.5 but can be overpowered and if you throw enough junk at them they get rattled (lots of low slices and then heavy high top spin). fun to play though since it makes you feel younger albeit it very frustrating if you lose. :)
The last female I lost to ended up being Top 25 NCAA D1 and got as high as Top 150 in WTA doubles, but still embarassing.

At our club, we sometimes play socials with the teens. All of them play high school tennis and take privates and clinics weekly. Some are state ranked and some have sectional rankings. These kids are good. Some are really good and range in age from 13 - 17. I've seen them take down 4.0 men. I wold rate several of them in the 4.0 - 4.5 categorey. The one thing lacking in all of them is muscle development in the arms, shoulders, and abs. Were it not for this, they would be whupping up on more adults. They have beautiful strokes and games and for the most part, great attitudes and seem to enjoy hitting with the old people.

My son is thirteen and he beats me regularly in our most recent set I lost 7-5 but we haven't played in a while. He is the 1 seed on his junior high team & just starting to play tournaments. I am not ashamed. I embrace my defeat because as long as he is hitting and working on his strokes he is getting better even if it is as my expense.

I've never played a boy that young, but when I was 21 or so (36 now), I played some local phenom girl, she was probably about 13-14. We played a set, and she won either 7-5 or 7-6. She didn't do anything exceptionally well, but she did everything very well. She had good power, good placement, good variety, came to net, and 14 year old legs. It was a good hit, and I didn't mind losing.
Last year, I played a girl (25 maybe?) That played for either a Div 2 or 3 team in college. These days I don't get to play more than once or twice a week, and I was able to beat her. She didn't hit that hard, but had really good placement. Her "problem" as it were was that she totally played the percentages. Any ball to a corner, she would hit crosscourt. Any short ball, she would approach down the line, ect. Her predictability was her undoing [/evil laugh].
Quality opponents are quality opponents, regardless of age, sex, or race. I never feel bad losing to a better player.
