View Full Version : By the way, from watching Federer in 1999

or was it 2000? Against Sampras. Holy Cow, this guy changed his leg set up, as dramatically as Borg did eons back. It was a big change. And I think it has helped him a LOT. Much more power and spin potential. And a big knee bend now.
Another example of Fed doing whatever is necessary to win.

What do you mean by he has "changed his leg set up?"

he didn't bend his knees back then

The thing that I've noticed is that Federer's current serving stance is strikingly similar to one he had in 2000 and parts of 2001, with knee bend.
If you look at this clip from 2000,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Zyw7zqybW0 at 34 seconds, notice his knee bend.
Then compare it to the Wimbledon 2001, and the knee bend is a bit less.
Compare that motion to the one in this clip
Basically, I've noticed that the serve motion from 2000 and the Hopman Cup 2001 are very similar to his current serve. Yet, his serve from Wimbledon of 2001 is suddenly a bit different. That makes me wonder, did he really change the serve or has he just been changing it for certain surfaces?

Roger used to lift his forward foot when he threw the ball up, a la Pete Sampras. Now he slides his forward foot back in his take up and explodes up. I always found it weird that he moves his foot back. Well, he never has to worry about a foot fault.

Wow, good observations. I assumed(which one should never do really) that since he was serving like that against Sampras, that this is what he was doing all the time back then. He really didn't bend much at all, in that match, his back leg. Now he really does.
