View Full Version : Who'd You clone ( pro's of yesteryear ) to stop FEDERER ?

SO , FED is very much running away with the slams - while roddick slums , nadal loses edge , safin loses temper & gonzo chokes after having a break.

I see no other way than to rely on the medical miracle of CLONING . Say , cloning is perfected in yr 2008 - then who'd You clone to stop FED ?

Keep in mind I have great respect for Roger & do wish him the best so that he could win upto 13 slams ( I'm sorry but I'm a terrible person when it comes to Pete Sampras - I think he (Pete ) is a scaled down version of GOD , so although I love Rog , I'm just not gonna wish him on no#14 . )

Personally I'd clone Sampras of 1999 & that'd be enough.
But for the French - I'd like to clone Agassi as well .

What a great thread.

Agassi

Circa 1999-00 (4 Finals in Slams, winning 3 of them). He played with impunity during this time.

Though I felt that Sampras of 99 was the unbeatable choice - then when I went to vote & found myself thinking - why Wouldn't PETE of 96 be able to beat Roger ?
I searched my soul & coudn't come up with an answer . Just couldn't - So I Voted sampras of 93-98 , to me even the weaker sampras would be able to beat federer just because of his mindset of a great champion - breakpoints down ? he'll serve three unreturnables out of trouble . but it'll be a Five Setter ( OUT of respect to ROG ) . I know - I'm biased (when it comes to PETE ). I'm sorry . But You are not . So , vote for it .

Since the thread is repeated, I'll repeat my answer.

Rod Laver, Neale Fraser, Tony Roche ...

Talented lefties all. Not sure they'd win, but they'd put up a good fight.

I would clone Federer to stop himself . The original Federer would not know how to play the cloned Federer http://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif

as for pros of yesteryear, I would clone Pete Sampras and add in some muscle dna from Boris Becker. He would serve 15 mph faster and hit more punishing ground strokes.

i think only sampras might stop federer. Sampras had great shots but federer can do whatever he wants with the ball.

OMG , that Becker-Sampras DNA combination is even better than My original cloning idea . See , You give tennis-lovers a great tech ( like graphite ) - they'll always twist it into some crazy mix like graphite/kevler or n-coded or karbon-black . lolz. So , True about boris-power . what percentage will the mix be ? 70%-SAMPRAS/20%-Becker & a 10%-high modulous AGASSI ?

^^^ haha. sounds good.

Like with modified cars, you don't want to add in too much power otherwise, it could have reliability/endurance problem in the long run.

But how does it work? Assuming that you can assume the clone has the same kind of tennis gift as the original still if you cloned Sampras today he would only be a baby. You would have to clone Federer at the same time and wait for at least 25 yrs to make it work. Then again you have to create the same kind of upbringing that the real Sampras and the real Federer received to make it fair so you have to clone Aggassi, Nadal, Roddick, Becker, Edberg, Chang and the whole gang in order to create that same upbringing. Sounds a bit too complicated to me.

I'm so so surprised by the poll so far . only 1 guy thinks Agassi-clone c'd beat Federer ? . plz , tell me that Agassi-2000 c'd be beaten by FED & I'll rest my case . Agassi in 2000 was just sublime , even a 80% of that in my view could have beaten The FED-EX of AUS2007.

yeah but did you read Yannick Noah's recent comments about Federer ?
He said when he watched Federer playing, he felt like Federer still had two more gears left to move up to if the situation requires it.

So by that logic, had Gonzalez performed better at AUS2007, Federer would have raised his game to counter what Gonzalez got.

Here are Yannick Noah's exact words:

Noah lauds Federer

Jan 30, 2007

Former French Open champion Yannick Noah says he has never seen a player dominate the game as Roger Federer does.

"At this level, I have never seen that. (Bjorn) Borg could beat you any time he wanted but you always had the feeling you could have a chance, grab a game or a set," Noah, who won the French Open in 1983, told sports daily L'Equipe on Tuesday.

"As for Roger, he wins the tournament without losing a set and you still have the feeling he has a lot of resources left."

Federer won his third Australian Open on Sunday by beating Chile's Fernando Gonzalez 7-6 6-4 6-4.

"Gonzalez had two set points in the first set but you got the feeling that Roger told himself 'alright, it's time to push on the pedal and I will just kill him on the spot'," Noah added.

"You feel he is on gear four at the maximum while he has six gears. It's awesome."

Swiss Federer will emulate Borg and Rod Laver with an 11th Grand Slam victory if he wins the French Open in June.

The all-time record is held by Pete Sampras with 14 Grand Slam triumphs.

Thank You guys for posting on this thread . Special thnx to mick for that Noah comments link . I left 10days for the polls , I am VERY VERY INTERESTED to see not only the poll results but also Your comments as well - You guys can suggest Your fav as well - I think I might have left Edberg - he had a tremendous S/V game that might have been very effective against Roger . No shame in admitting that - I didn't watch Tennis Before Borg/McENROE . So , I might have left some former greats . I apologize to those fans . Your suggestion is most appreciated . Just Like You I love the game of Tennis & yes I'd like to see a good rivalry against FED . So far he has flattened the ground - pretty bad . My Only hope in the recent players lie with Safin . He has the goods to dismantle FED . But as we all know - Safin is LOCO !!!

I am not voting on such a bios poll. Why are Sampras's options in capitials, and why does he have 2 choices? Why not give the option of several good Agassi years (e.g. 1995 or 1999). Why is Muster on the poll? Where are the likes of Lendl and Connors? Also this question is very surface specific. Federer would not have a chance of beating Borg on the red dirt, but I would fancy Federer's chances on the Decoturf courts of the USO. You will have to do better if you want my opnion.

I did think of the two-separate versions of the AGASSI when I set-up the pole , but only 1 version ( in my view ) was compatible with FED . & Yes , I'm sorry - I did left connors out , but I did apologize for that . By No means I want a BIASED pole . I'm a Die-Hard Sampras fan but that's me , I'm very open for debate - Please leave your Fav nominee on the msg board , as soon as this pole ends , I'm gonna set-up a new one with all your nominee's ( I PROMISE ) . I think we can set-up a 10-option pole ( max ) here . That'll be fun . For now this was the best I could come up with caz FED looks so good . about MUSTER - I thaught he could be the one to beat Fed on clay if he became unbeatable.

Ahh, One More thing - some of the guys are suggesting that we should clone FED himself to stop him - hmm, but I have this Top Spin 2 game on the Xbox360 & I did play Fed Vs Fed ( one Fed is me against the Fed A.I.) on Hard Difficulty - but Fed seems a little less aggressive when coming to the net with the A.I. one . I c'd totally fool him into the net & hit passing . Now , I have watched carefully - the A.I. plays 90% close to FED in right now real-life , it always does the things Fed w'd do - even hits a risk shot as FED does if cornered . so , I was thinking - our clone may win against regular FED.

Alright I will let you off as you are a new user who is appologetic. If ten (open-era) contenders were included I would defenitly put Sampras, Agassi, Connors, Lendl, McEnroe, Borg and probabely Becker, Edberg, Willander, Courier to make up the ten.

As for my opnion, it is still surface dependant. I think that Sampras (93-98 ) would probabely be the best overall challange. I think that on Grass and the Deco-hard courts (e.g. USO) Sampras would probabely win most of the time. On rebound ace and clay Federer would win. Agassi would be the best challange on rebound ace. I would probabely take the 1995 version actually but its so hard to say because he had more sucess on rebound ace towards the end of his career. On clay there are a number of players who would beat Federer. Borg would win by the biggest margin I think, but players like Muster, Lendl, Willander, Kuerten would also win. On a neutral speed hard court Sampras and Lendl would be the toughest challengers. Connors, McEnroe and Agassi would also pose a threat IMO.

McEnroe. The guy plays S&V, a type Federer rarely ever sees. McEnroe won't get frustrated and his overall game would make Federer fight for everything.

Federer would probably win due to superior footspeed and his lethal hitting from all over the court. But McEnroe's prowess at the net would neutralize many of Federer's advantages.

Sampras for sure. Fed would have to clone himself with Edberg and Ivanisevic to have a chance versus Sampras.

Mcenroe would be easy meat for Fed. Mcenroe only won 2 of his last 26 mateches versus Lendl, Edberg and becker. His game isnt big enough, hes also not athletic enough.

If we can mix players then I have a different player. I would have Goran's 1st serve, Sampras's 2nd seve, Agassi's return, Agasi's ball striking and ability to hit the ball early, Edberg's volleys (with McEnroe's movment and anticipation), Becker's diving volleys, Sampras's slam dunk, Borg's movement, Borg's stamina, Borg's mindset (except in the USA where Sampras's mind kicks in), Vilas's backhand, Lendl's forehand, Sampras's running forehand, Scrichapan's physiclal flexibility, Santoro's drop shot, Goran's sheer power (when needed), Safin's coolness, Rios's 360 degree shot.

Federer would not stand a chance!

Yeah , He pretty much summoned it up for us all . Ok , but that'd be very complicated indeed , Try to keep it to 3<= players . I'll explain why - The Pole limit here is 10 , I'll put the most popular candidates into the 1st seven then put 3-most popular mix - that way we'll definitely get a very good pole ( I guess You can never be perfect ) - but that's a try.

If Sampras could teach Nadal how to volley like he did, Federer would have his hands full. Right now, Federer still beats Nadal but it would be different if Nadal could volley like Sampras. That would tip the balance in favor of Nadal, I think, even on the faster surfaces.

Ahh , the sampras-volley was so great partly because of his serve - the serve made the volley look casual , so sampras may have to teach the serve as well - but I do agree if nadal picked up the volley or finisher better - FED may well have his hands full.

I would definitely clone Sampras of the 93-98 era. He played superb tennis and I was always eager to watch him play.

larlarbd,

Are you sure the clone would have the tennis skills of the original person ???

I think when you clone somebody, the clone would have the same appearance and the same physical and analytical capabilities/capacities but I think tennis skills are a learned ability that cannot be passed on to the clone.

for instance:

Jimmy Connors' and Bjorn Borg's sons have nearly the same genetics as their fathers but they are not top ranked tennis players.

You need to check with the clone scientists ASAP ! :)

JOHN McENROE
BJORN BORG

CRAZY DNA-MIX 1 ( SAMPRAS/AGASSI/BECKER)

CRAZY DNA-MIX 3 (CONNORS/BECKER/McENROE )

now , some of you guys said pat rafter - yes , if I get 5+ msg posts - I'll put Pat ( I personally loved the guy ) instead of one of the crazy DNA mix . 10 is the max pole we can do & also you guys decide about the DNA mix - keep it to 3-players to avoid complications ( I beleive even if cloning is perfected in yr2008 - still 3 person mix will be quite difficult to pull off ).
