For most people including myself: we won't reach 5.0 in our natural life.

Or become famous. (I don't want burst any bubbles here but the chances of life living up to your desires - I'm referring to your user name here - are, I'm afraid, pretty remote. Certainly remote enough to reconsider that name. It isn't too late to change it. How about Iwannabecomefinancially
solvent? Boring, I know, but not an unworthy aspiration... what about I
wannastoptakingmyparentsmoney... not that I'm saying that's you, but some off-spring with modest ambitions of world domination do, in my exp, have a habit of not, er, working... and lastly, Iwannabecomementallybalancedenoughtonotwannabecome famous... please see the likes of Britney S for the damaging effects of seeking fame.)

Please don't take offense at my sense of humour, only IMO that user name is slightly asking for trouble, and I also always think there's something a little bit disturbing about ppl who 'want to become famous.'

don't be too harsh, I mean if your 6 or 7 right now then sure you can reach 5.0 sometime when your 16 or 17. But if you're over 10, which I'm sure you are, then there are little to no chances of you becoming a 5.0. Don't feel bad though, I'm never gonna get there either. Maybe I'll have to settle for a 4.20-4.25 sometime in the future.

If you have time, and put your mind to it(having a competent coach is necessary) you can become a 5.0(If you are starting as a teenager) despite what people say on the board because my coach has seen it happen.

It depends on the individual.
Depending on your age, athletic ability, skill in other sports and how close those sports are to Tennis, there will be a natural level you will reach very quickly.

In my case that level was 3.5 after having played sports pretty competively all my life(mainly Cricket, for my college).
I was probbaly 2.5 in weeks, and 3.5 in about 12 months. I might have done it in 6 months if I played more, espceially in the winter.
That was 6 months ago. Since then, progress has been slow. I think I am slightly better, but I will know only when the leagues start in the spring. I think(or hope) I will be 4.0 by fall, but I no longer take any improvement for granted. 4.5 is a mere dream.

You could defintiely achieve that goal in the time-frame you stated.

As for 5.0?? That will take a bit longer but it is not as impossible as people think. You just have to put the effort into it if you really want it.

Good luck!

so i still have a chance of becoming a 5.0 depending on my effort and my speed and the way i play?

^^^ Of course. 5.0 is not some mythical level. With practice and dedication it is very attainable.

i think you can. i helped a friend play tennis for 4 months and now he is about 3.5 level (he just needs to work on volleys).

As long as you have the physical tools, all you need is time and hard work.

Edit: I just read your thread concerning what, exactly, a coach does so now I'd say you have the potential to be a ball point pen, at least. Maybe even a lamp post if you really work hard.

Two years to get to 3.5? Doable fer sure!!!

Eye on the ball, play every day, and no fried foods!

I think it is attainable. Just it isn't easy. Make sure you play ALOT. Even during the winter. Thats what I did. I am confident that I could have given a good 3.5 a real fight when I was new to the game, like 6months.

LOL.
I think for people who have started playing tennis in their late teens to mid-20's like myself, many of us can fairly quickly reach an intermediate/decent level, due to the fact that we have already fully developed our hand-eye coordination, speed, and agility, etc. from playing other sports and whatnot, provided that we have the discipline to learn the strokes and practice on regular basis.
But we may reach a plateau rather quickly as well. Hopefully I still have plenty of room to grow. :D

in my belief, a decent athlete can reach 4.5 by putting in a quite a bit of time and and practicing maybe an hour and a half a day as long as its quality practice. it'll take a few years, but its not unachievable by any means and will differ depending on the person.

5.0 and higher is achieved by more serious training and will require multiple hours per day.

I would like to know how big a constraint age is to reaching 4.5+.

Does any one know of people reaching 4.5+ levels after 40, from below ?
i.e, players who had never reached 4.5 before 40, but improved to 4.5+ after 40?

ZPTennis

I know 3 guys who are over 50 years old that are strong 4.5's however they've also played tennis for many many years. And also are among the top guys in the country for their age.

But achieving 4.5 level after your 40 should not be unreachable by any means. Although i dont know yet what it feels like to be 40 either. :)

in these two years of playing tennis, i constantly did many researches and many other imitations and other junks to improve my games and my skills. I am currently 4.0 right now, self rated.

I think a lot of people can potentially reach a 5.0 level starting as a teenager but it would just take a lot of commitment and time. And with a social life (that you hopefully have), academics, ect it would be hard.

Who needs to reach a 5.0 level anways? It would be great to but tennis is already super fun if you get to a 4.0 level. A lot more strategy involed (hopefully).

ANYbody can reach any goal. It's just a matter of determination you have. I went from a 2.0 to a 3.5-4.0 in about 10 months.

Not necessarily.
Not everyone can be a world-class player, no matter how hard you try.
