I wasnt really sure where this goes so I just decided to put it here. anyway, Im a freshman in college and I've just recently decided that I would really love to do something in tennis for the rst of my life. Now, playing pro is obviously out of the question and I dont really see myself teaching, but I was wondering what other jobs I could get at like a club, or with the USTA, how much I could make from them, and what a good thing is to major in for them, thanks for any advice

Here is a list of opportunities in tennis: (Certainly not a complete one!)

Racquet Dealer (Including pro shop ownership, manufacturer's rep, etc.)

Clothing Distributor and Representative

Stringing Specialist

Club Manager

Maintence Supervisor

Program Specialist

Recreational Manager

Tournament Director

Social Director

High School Coach

Player developement coach

Pro Shop Manager

Web Page Manager

There are probably dozens more. I believe others can add to this list.

I like the idea of being a club or tennis director, but how do you generally work your way up to that?

I have made it one of my goals to string at a grand slam tournament some point in my life. I don't know where I will go with my career, but at some point I want to string for Wimby, US, Aussie, or maybe the French.

Good list above.

Also, every business needs more "generic" functions, like accounting, finance, marketing, HR, etc. So you could look for those types of opportunities in the tennis world as well.

You should have entered the World Stringing Championships at the Tennis Channel Open this coming Friday and Saturday. The winner gets to string at the U.S. Open for the pros. (I'm competing in it so I'll let you know how it goes. I had the second fastest time last year...winner gets $10,000 in prizes...we'll see!)

Club Directors usually evolve from head pros first. I was first an instructor for a recreation departement when I was in high school, then an assistant pro and high school coach, then head pro, then tennis director then General Manager, and now I own my own academy and will be opening a new club in the next year or so.

You need experience in not just teaching tennis, but organizing other pros, programming club events, running tournaments, interaction with othe club managers, be fiscally responsible, (prepare budgets, design marketing strategies, work with the USTA and other tennis entities, etc.)

Your best bet is to interview some club directors and see how they did it. Also, there are now University programs designed to train for these positions. (Although, I would take the hands on experience over any 'higher education.')

Become a USTA Official. I’ve seen people umpire BIG-TIME tournament matches who started out in local events.

I depends on how much money you want to make and where you want to live. For instance, if you want to live in Steamboat Springs, CO, chances are your tennis career will bring on starvation.

If you want to make a good living, build tennis courts. I have a friend that is grossing over a million a year that works our of his kitchen at home and has one employee on the payroll with a bunch of sub-contractors. Not bad for never leaving the farm.
