Was he considered greater than Laver and later Borg just because of Grand Slam count?
And was he greater than Sampras until Sampras tied and broke his record?
(I am aware of the amateur / pro rules during the 60s.)
No. He was considered a great player, but even with his Slam record, he wasn't considered better than Borg or Laver. He won those Slams before the open era, when Laver, Rosewell, Kramer and other greats weren't eliglbe to compete in Slam events. He often got his clock cleaned when he went up against those guys outside of Slams. And Sampras is in a totally different league, even before breaking the record.

Nah. It's not all about the slam count even if it is important. Like Phil said, you have to factor in the field of competition.

No. The cream of the crop turned pro. Emmo stayed an amateur and was unquestionably the top amateur.
