View Full Version : Why my 2HBH can't absorb power?

With a one-handed forehand I can deal with power by first "absorbing" it and then return it back with power. With a 2HBH I just can't absorb the power so I have to pit power against power which sometimes leads to loss of control. What have I done wrong?

maybe your racquet is too light and head heavy?Maybe you should add weight to the 3 and 9 o clock position for more stability?

I think my wrist "gives" a little when the racquet contacts the ball on my forehand so the power is "absorbed" by the wrist. Can't do that on the backhand side.

hahahah, are you just hitting the sweetspot with the fh, but not with the bh? Keep your eyes on the ball! Actually do it,though. don't let you eyes lose sight of the ball.

i actually understand what your talking about and im feeling the same way right now. I'm experimenting with a one-hander but for a quickfix i have found making sure my left wrist is completley laid back helps a bit

I too had problems with my 2HBH sometime... It lacked power, consistency, depth, etc... I started to incorporate these rules that made my 2HBH one of my best shots and the one that I feel the most enjoying stroke in my game now. Keep it simple:
1 - Hold your racquet loose. Like it was slipping from your fingers
2 - When going for the swing also relax your chest muscles, ESPECIALLY your arms too. DONT LOCK the elbows. Just keep it loose and relaxed. Keep your wrist loose too. Make only yours oblique abs and torso make the work for you.
3 - When you start rotating, point the buttcap to the ball...it happens inconsciously to me but try to incorporate that. To me it happens atuomatically since when you rotate and if you're relaxed the first thing to rotate will be your shoulders and torso....then your arms and forearms will start to follow, as leaving the wrist and racquet behind (this part is when the buttcap is pointed to the ball)
4 - Just complete the whole rotation, always keeping yours muscles loose/relaxed and finish bringing your racuqet to the ball
5 - Follow through
These rules made my backhand really effortless just make sure you keep in mind to maintain relaxed throughout the whole motion....
Hope it helps
It sounds to me that your thinking on the issue is clouded. The ball is only on your racquet from 4ms or so. How can you be consciously absorbing the ball in 4ms and then returning it with power. All of the hit happens based on what you do before the ball gets to the racquet. You have to prepare and swing and let it happen. Don't try to think about what is actually happening during the hit. Concentrate on your preparation and swing, and the hit will naturally follow.
