It isn't possible to determine your NTRP with that video.

1. You shouldn't play inside, it's just stupid.
2. You've been playing for 3 months, so without even looking at the video I would say 2.0 or less.

I don't want to discourage a young, obviously keen player, so I'll simply say that I'm sure your half-volley is probably surprisingly good!

Edit: I'll also say that saying stafoo to people is impolite, and I'll echo everyone else when they say that videoing inside (a room) makes it impossible to NTRP rate someone.

Well, it's sorta hard to rate you with a minute long video, and it's even harder when you're in a room, playing against a mattress, but you're probably better than a lot of beginners I know. I think you should get a good private teacher. In my opinion, it's probably to best to learn the right technique from the very beginning before you get bad habits. Most private teachers charge from anywhere to $40-75/ hour. Usually, it's around 50 dollars.

Believe it or not, private lessons from a decent teacher can help a lot.

Just think about the variables from hitting in your house, on carpet, in socks, against a mattress, without an opponent. That isn't even tennis. If that's tennis, then throwing crumpled paper balls into a garbage bin is basketball. Keep in mind that I'm not insulting you, but what you are doing just isn't tennis.

They'll probably be outside, too. On a court. Requiring shoes. Having a net. No mattresses in sight.

Hilarious. Its 9:52 on a school night. You think I can go play on a court? And even during the daytime, I can't lug around a video camera just to record me playing tennis.

This is kind of an odd question but..
Did you ever play outside before? It's slightly different from hitting against a mattress.
Find a friend the loves tennis as much as you do. Play outside. Practice. That basically what I did. I found a really good friend to play tennis with. It helps a lot. I take lessons on Saturdays too. It's $35/hr.
Very fun.

Anyone remember the video that guy did of him air-swinging in his apartment to show off his 'new forehand'? That was equally amusing (and funnier still when everyone pointed out it was too flat a stroke, and he then suddenly claimed it wasn't actually quite his real new stroke because of the limitations of his apartment on his swing....)

first of all, no one can rate you anything, its just not possible. Your not even hitting any balls on the court; theres no pace (not even a predictable one) and really anyone can imitate strokes. just practice, if you feel you must post a video, record one on the courts, but be weary of "haters". but you got spunk :D

I'm going to be the oddball and rate you a 3.0. :D

What would be interesting to see is a video of you outside on a court and see which one of us is the best guesser at the inside video. Because its almost impossible to tell.

So im making an educated guess based on limited space, reacting to a ball thats coming back almost immediately and having to use shortened or quicker strokes without being able to prepare your footwork properly.

I would like to see a deeper knee bend and earlier racquet preparation - cannot neglect even on a slow true surface like indoor carpet. Other than that, looking strong, keep hitting those balls!:) Good NTRP for you!

Dont feel bad about playing indoors at home! Its enthusiastic and I support it as long as you dont break anything in the house :D One commentator once sayd Nadal use to play in hes room and hes neighbourgs werent so happy with that :D LOL think about rafa hitting hes topspinner inside a house

But dont expect a ntrp rating with a video like that! And from your replies I got the idea you wanted some compliments for being so good in such a short time, m8 its not constructive and it doesnt get ya anywhere! So try to maintain you motivation and try to play more in a real court or at least go hit a real wall outdoors!

It is hard to give you a NTRP rating without knowing some additional informatiom. Are you using standard gold toe socks? What kind of mattress are you using, is it memory foam, medium firmness, or something else? Is the carpet cut, looped, or multi looped, and is it regulation length? Also the dimensions and composition of the wall would be helpful. Are there any wind conditions due to air conditioning? Just get back to me and I will calculate your NTRP.

Oh and beware of carpet toe, it may end your short lived career very early!

Maybe I am in the minority, but I thought most of you were a little hard on the kid. It struck me as something that I might do. Even now, there are times that I will find some weird place to connect a racquet with a ball. I admire the creativity it took to set up the mattress and camera

He has obviously been on a tennis court and you can tell from the video that he has good reflexes, and a sense for where the ball is going. As far as NTRP...strictly speaking this is a rating for adults. Don't worry about it right now. Just get out and play as much as you can. Play matches with anyone and everyone. (outside of course)

one criticism...please fix your serve immediately. The loose wrist, with the racquet head flopping around is a pet peeve of mine. Also, it looks like you have a forehand grip. Change it now, even if it means you get fewer serves in at first. You strike me as someone that can pick up the strokes quickly. Check out some video of pros serving and watch how they control the racquet. You want to be relaxed, but in control.

Keep having fun with tennis, and don't stop finding creative ways to hit the ball.

All Courts
04-11-2007, 08:33 AM
Well, maybe I'm the only one, but I'm impressed. Your reflexes are at least good and I don't know if that's how you always hit your forehand, or it's because the ball is coming back to you so quickly, or you simply don't have enough room, but more rotation would help out.

As for your serve, as oldguysrule said, it needs works, but I'm guessing that you're unable to properly toss the ball because of...the ceiling heh. But when out on the court, I'd suggest more rotation on both the serve and the forehand. Also, nice footwork -- yes you're in socks and on a carpet, but you're on your toes and moving, anticipating.

As others have said it's impossible to give you a rating because there's no way to tell if the ball's going over the net, staying in, etc... but I'll give you an A+ for enthusiasm and creativity. Also, that is some solid ball-striking for someone who has been playing for four months -- keep at it and try to find someone with a small digital camera that shoots video and give us some court footage! If your school doesn't allow cameras, just check out a public court and start filming.

I dunno about you guys but I used to do the same thing when I was a kid, ok, without a camera though. I was so obsessed with tennis, and none of my friends were as keen to play tennis as I was. It's fun, brings back memories. Keep at it kiddo, but try to join a club or something. "Room tennis" is good for reflexes but it might teach you the wrong mechanics for your strokes.

It's really impossible to rate you base on that video. But based on the amount of time you've been playing, maybe a 2.0 or so.

Your NTRP level is determined by how much you win and lose to other players of varying levels and not by what your strokes look like. I know 5.0 players that have strokes that would make you think they were a 3.0, but they manange to win matches. And the converse is true, too, i.e., 3.0 players that have great looking strokes but can't seem to win a match.

Putting that aside, I still think you would get much more help from private lessons from a good coach. It's alot easier to learn one on one, you know?

go to www.uspta.com. Click on find a pro, and put in your zip code. It'll give you a list of all the private teachers around you, and I'm sure you'll be able to call someone and arrange for a meeting on some other courts. Usually, at tennis clubs, if you're not a member, you can still get lessons. They just charge extra. That's the case with me, and even though it's a bit pricey, I still get lessons from time to time.

In my opinion, that's the most efficient and fastest way to improve. Getting help in TW is great, but getting actual lessons can take you so much farther.

Oh, and I started off getting lessons from a really bad teacher who almost got me stuck with bad habits. On your first lesson with your teacher, check to see if he or she tries to change your serving grip to continental. If he or she doesn't, and lets you serve that way, then you should probably switch.
Good luck
