Nice list. Though it seems Lubs and Karlovic's serve are more feared than Roddick's.

Didn't know Dent was quite that powerful. What a waste. Man needs to stop with the junk food. Course it ain't gonna happen.

Great list. Interesting to see all the ATP services speeds. Thanks for taking the time to post it.

You have J. Johansson on their twice. Is there a reason or is it a typo??

Murray hit one at 145 mph?? wtf I know he can serve hard but i never expected such a big serve by him

Great serve is not just about pace, it's a combination of pace, placement, spin, variety, etc. that matters. From a brief look at that list, I could tell you that if one were to analyse those players' serve scientifically (which I would be happy to do), guys like Safin, Fleishman, Youzhny, Tsonga would come out on top of the list.

(SoBad)that is why fed and sampras never averaged that high of a serve in there matches. yea andy tries to hit big but he cant place it as well as the others.

I thought bob bryan was @ 140 but .06 off isnt much different i guess

im shocked about murray's being so high. he seems to have more trouble holding serve than a lot of those names around his.

Yeah, they could definitely learn a thing or two from guys like Safin, Fleishman, Youzhny and Tsonga who are best servers, scientifically speaking.

I think something was up with the radar gun. They can malfunction every once in awhile, or in special scenarios. I think he'll have to hit anywhere close to that again before I'll actually believe it. =)

I saw the match on TV. He hit those serves right at the beginning of the match, and looking at the livescore on the Internet.

He indeed was hitting lights out, compared to his usual self. For the first two service games, he was averaging 132 mph on his first serve, believe it or not... and the gun wasn't malfuctioning. He was REALLY hitting as hard as Djokovic.

He ended the match with a 104 mph average, though.

As you may know (if you had any chance at all to follow some of the research that has been released on this forum recently), my analytical skills had been put to rigorous testing by this entire forum and I believe the general consencus rating was somewhere around A++. Thanks for your question.

man, watching Ivo Karlovic serving against Blake, jeez his serves are fking killer.

but tbh, i think its not the speed of serves, but what you put with that speed, like uber top spin from some of the slower serves.

I agree...I think these newer guns are full of *****. No way some of these pro's hit 15-20 mph faster than Pete in the early-mid 90's. Agassi even said the way they measure speed is different from years past. 155 MPH my *****.

Andres
05-29-2007, 11:18 AM
The early 90s guns didn't measure speed at the contact point, but several feet later.

If anything, THOSE guns weren't that accurate ;)

Actually difference in speed gun is much less of significance than
the measuring point.

The hairy tennis ball is designed to lose lots of speed after it leaves the racquet.

Plus the surfaces have been slowed significantly.
By the time it reaches returner after the bounce on surface,
I actually think it's pretty slower than 90's.

Taylor Dent in his 5 setter against Hewitt a while back was consistently serving in the 140s. The highest one I remember him getting in was 144mph. He should be added to the list.

Edit: Never mind I jsut sa he was up there on the list with 153mph. The racket technology I think makes a big difference to why pros are serving harder than before.

I'm looking at Oscar Hernandez serve statics on the official website.

Fastest serves by location:
Deuce:
Outwide: 187 kmh
Body: 202 kmh
T: 235 kmh

Advantage:
Outwide: 192 kmh
Body: 190 kmh
T:179 kmh

The average speed for the T serve on the deuce court was 186 kmh, also 186 the body serve, and 182 the outwide serve.

And he had NO aces down the T, to the deuce court. Not even the 235 kmh one.

That leads me to think the gun missclocked the serve. 35 kmh is a HUGE difference between fastest serves on different locations of the court.

I'm sure a dozens of top 100 players in 90's would have clocked
over 140's if they used current measuring point.

Guys like Krajicek, Stich, Ivanesvic, Foget, Rosset, Becker, Sampras
even Magus Gustafson and Enqvist. I mean pretty much all top players.
They all went for big serves.

Clocked in 1994. Different guns ;)
I'm sure he would clock WELL over 140, even 145 in a modern Ricoh or Getronics gun.

Radar gun is pretty old technology. Basic principle stays same.
They have changes the frequency of the signal but I don't think it
changes anything in basic theory behind it.

But its reading can vary widely depending on how you measure it or
how you calibrate it.

So I don't think it's the gun. I suspect they juiced up(calibrated) and
measure it differently.

We're talking about the same thing. Old guns didn't measure the speed right at the contact point, but several feet later.

Ricohs, IBMs and Getronics (just to mention 3 types of modern radar guns) DO measure the speed right off the racquet. They're just calibrated differently.

I believe these new guns measure the speed more accurately.

Anyone find it shady that alot of these guys got their maxspeed serves at the Davis Cups?

Not at all. In fact, it makes complete sense that it would only happen during Davis Cup matches. The atmosphere in a Davis Cup match is completely different than regular ATP matches. Imagine the adrenaline rush of the home crowd during an NBA Finals game versus the oh-so-unbelievably-rowdy Wimbledon spectators.

Davis Cup is more like the former.

I think ALL Davis cup rubbers have speed guns......more chance that a 200 ranked nobody will have an official speed.

On the Main tour only main 1 or 2 courts have speed guns so it is more likely low ranked players will miss out on a a chance to post official speed.

Now, Oscar Hernandez may only be sixth on the list with his 146-mph serve, but the number does not account for the king's tremendous placement of the serve. It is truly magnificent and hence the greatest ever.

It is little wonder that Oscar has won 7 bizzarro Wimbledons and 4 bizzarro French Opens over the years - at will. Tennis is so easy for the man that he didn't even bother trying in the real Wimbledon this year. Too cool.

It's all relative (and damned quick anyway!) His fastest is 139, but that was clocked at Wimbledon way back in 1998.

Serves like his and Goran's and Rusesdki, Phillipousis, Becker; what would the clock be if their serves were done in the last couple of years?

Look at the racquet Sampras used his whole career, and the tension at which he strung it at. (I think it was around 80 pounds or so) For him to hit a 139 mph serve with that racquet is unbelievable! Look at the top servers on that list and then see what racquets they play with. Way different than Sampras. I would like to see the top guys use the same racquet, tension, etc. to see who can serve it the fastest. I think that would be really cool.

140s... or 145 mph. Heck, perhaps 150?
The older guns clocked the speed when it approached the range of the gun, several feet past the contact point.

I wouldn't be surprised of Goran clocking a 143 mph serve when he was younger, and with a good shoulder

I thought serving speed is now measured when the ball immediately
leaves the racquet while, in the 90's and before, they used to measure
the speed of the ball when it's about to pass the net.

Plus, the electronic waves for the speed gun are different now, AFAIK.

Look for earlier posts by Andres Guazzelli on different speed guns and their

If I did the math correctly, numbers would adjust to roughly this. This is based on Mav's service formula. This can't be right, can it?

Old Measurement (at net) => New Measurement (at racquet)
100 => 123
105 => 129
110 => 135
115 => 141
120 => 147

The math may be right, but the gun wasn't measuring speed at the net.
The speed was measured between 7 and 9 feet after the contact point (around 2 meters). And it captured it at an angle. A slice serve outwide often was measured slower than a slice serve to the T, or a flat serve to the T.

When you say, measured at an angle, what do you exactly mean? Do you mean the gun was measuring about 7-9 feet into the court, parallel with baseline? I can adjust the numbers with this information.

There was one gun measuring the speed, and depending on the angle of the ball approaching the gun, the speed measured was one or the other.

The new guns are a group of several guns measuring speed at contact, from different angles.

tricky
08-03-2007, 02:34 PM
Hmm, measuring just 9 feet out, even allowing for variances in height and angle of shot, the difference is now between 5-7mph. A 100mph old school reading would scale up to 105. A 140mph old school reading would only bump up to 147mph.

And that's for IBM guns... Getronics are a whole new breed.
Maybe the most accurate among them all. I'm not sure why, or how is the technology envolved changing, but Getronics have a slight higher reading than IBM's and Ricoh's. Maybe it's even more accurate.

I think measuring it at angle means registering slower speed
since it travels less for dopler effects. But I could be wrong.
(I mean in an angle with ball's traveling direction).

Anyway, the ball is hairy. It loses pretty good speed traveling.

Also it loses signifcant amount of speed when it bounces
(maybe more now since surfaces are slower gnerally).

The "Freak" is good! He def has a good flat serve delivery. However, he is no 6'9- 6'10 giant. Ivo and Isner serves are huge weapons on hard courts (maybe grass). I've seen both in person this week and as hard as they can hit it, its the sheer angle delivery that gives players the most problem. The bounce is also quite high even in a flat delivery.

Ilia Bozoljac, a joker in tour, a guy who prefers to be a playboy rather then a tennis player, the serb with an odd two handers on both wings actually hit a 157mph world record serve. It was clearly clocked at 157 and in - during a davis cup. Unlucky for him - when the rewinded the clock they could not find the number ( coincidence - or who the hell is this guy to hold a WR in fastest serve ) - although Forget and Zimonjic both testified that they saw the clock after being amased with the speed of that particular serve.

Actually one more interesting thing is that he broke his finger while trying to catch Djokovic's serve in training and there went his DC clash vs Australia - down the drain .. ;)

I remember someone saying technology doesn't matter, wooden rackets or new rackets, it was a study done by tennis magazine with sampras and someone else, and the difference was 2 miles per hourIt was actually Mark Philippoussis, who at the time of the article had the fastest recorded serve. He hit serves with his graphite racquet and then hit serves with a wood Dunlop Maxply Fort. The difference was indeed only about 2 mph. So, as always, how you hit matters more than what you hit with.

What graphite racquet was he using? I'd think a wide body graphite racquet would make a substantial difference. When I switched from a Wilson Sting 110 (early graphite model) to a Slazenger Silloutte 105, I had to re-learn my strokes because it was so much more powerful.

Did the study control for other factors such as the racquet speed of each swing?

It seems to me that current pro women really pound the ball compared to the wood racquet seventies players.

Andres

And why is that??????
Because a really fast serve pays off better at Wimby and at the USO. A 150 mph serve ain't necesary at Roland Garros, where the returner is standing 68 feet behind the baseline.

The best clay serve should be a 112 mph kickserve. That's the most devastating clay serve.

Not really. While his 1st serve (around 115 mph) have a fair share of topspin, they're not really kickers. His true kickers are around 90, 92 mph.

The only two people I've seen clocking consistant kickserves over 110 mph are Wesley Moodie and Patrick Rafter.

Precisely. On a quicker surface, a fast serve would be more beneficial compared to a slower surface such as clay. This is because clay naturally slows down the ball after the ball contacts with the ground. With this logic in mind, it would be more intelligent to have a kick serve which jumps off the surface at high speeds - deadly.

If Karlovic would get some beef on his body, he could snap Roddicks record of 155 mph. I would really like to see him do it at Wimbledon.

I read in an interview with Ivo he believes that he can beat 155. And he holds the record of second serve speed 144mph.

Andres

The one I have online? yeah, it's outdated. The excel file I have on my computer not only has the fastest serves, but also:
* nationality,
* height,
* playing hand (in case you want to check the bigger serving lefties),
* most aces in a match,
* the tourney when they served those aces or that particulary fast serve,
* ammount of matches over 20 aces,
* over 30 aces
* over 35 aces
* over 40 aces
* over 45 aces
* over 50 aces

Plus, it's not only from 135 mph up, but from 130+ mph.

And I have at least, 50 more players than your 'ohhh updated' list.

So yeah, I'll keep trashing ;)

So, if you want my excel spreadsheet to update your serving stats, feel free to ask and I'll gladly send it to you ;)

I am not sure if they are doing this now in tennis, but I know that in MLB during the 80's and early 90's they juiced up the radar guns to be about 3-4 miles per hour faster than the pitches actually were. That is why it is not as common to see pitchers in baseball throwing over 100 mile per hour on a consistent basis.

They did it to please the fans, and perhaps tennis is doing that now, to increase interest from fans.

Somebody needs to look this "fact" up for me as I just can't find it anywhere on the Internet. In short, I can remember at the US Open in the early 90's Ilie Nastase had the fastest serve in the senior's draw (doubles) using a Prince Thunderstick. I could be wrong (and most likely am - ???), but I remember it being something like 129 mph which at that time in the tournament was alse the fastest serve amongst all players, even the main draw open players. I am not sure on the mph, but I do remember that again he had the fastest serve at a certain stage of the tournament. Does anybody else remember this?

Take care and have a good one-

Today's guns measure the serve a few mm from contact compared to the old ones that measure a few feet away from the racket.

lack of intelligence = attack a poster..

/golfclap

look all you gotta do is provide a single link proving your statements, instead you attack me for not caring about my grammar and typing skills.

just simply post a link. all you gotta do is go to the page you found the information and copy and paste the stuff in the address bar.

Yes. Soderling also hit a few that were in the 140s and he's also not on the list.

There is a comercial with Djokovic where you can see that his fastest serve is 222kmh (138mph). Nothing special but he could get on the list.

sadly he never plays on the big courts on the ATP pro tour with the speed guns, non televised courts and the Challengers don't usually have them.
