Played a few semi-competitive doubles matches today.. only the second time i've done so and I ain't doing it again. Its a whole different ball game, way more difficult than singles imo.

i hate it, but when you have a coach like mine, you really don't have a choice

What I hate is seeing young people who claim to 'hate' doubles.
You don't hate doubles.
You just don't understand doubles.
I hope you both reconsider and make the effort to learn how to play.

Everybody hates doubles, and there's a new thread about it every week. Just remember that playing doubles is good for your singles game because of net play and angles and what not.

there are times when the best singles player can't even play a good doubles match.
Doubles matches are not invented because the game needs to pacify the lousier players.

Saying you hate playing doubles is sort of like saying that you hate playing tennis because like you said, it's a completely different game. Yes, doubles is much more challenging and difficult than singles. You have to be much more accurate in returning serve, you cannot just block or chip it back. You have to be able to control your serve and your groundstrokes so much more in doubles. You also obviously need a much better transition game in getting to the net and you have to be able to place your volleys better as there's less open court to volley into. You also need to have a very good overhead and be able to place the overhead well. Overall, there's just so much more going on in doubles than in singles and you have to be thinking all the time in doubles. The net man will make you pay for any laspe in thinking at all times.

Yes, yes... all those things are true - and that 'spin' makes it seem that doubles is indeed "more difficult" than singles.
But, of course, you neglected to mention the fact that there is another person on your side of the net helping you out in doubles. That goes a significant way in compensating for the elements that are more difficult than in singles.
No... doubles is not "more difficult" than singles. Nor is it easier than singles. It's simply different.

Help you out or get in your way, depending on how you look at it.

Yeah I guess you're right, I didn't really know what to do when I was at the net and my partner was returning or serving lol I just wanted to move back. The ppl I was with only ever play doubles so I guess I was in the deep end. I still prefer singles though :)

I am an old guy (53) and I will say I hate "bad" doubles. When no one knows anything about court position, teamwork, and communication. On a 4.0 team I played on, this accounted for 12 out of 14 guys!

Doubles can be a lot more fun if you add these two rules to the game.
1. If you get passed on the lob you lose the game instantly
2. If you flinch or run off outside the sidelines when at the net position you lose the point
Practice was a lot of fun in college!

I am a junior player and I never liked doubles, and I don't like it now. I think the reasons so many junior don't like doubles is becuase they don't see many pros playing it on tv. And becuase many coaches don't train players to play doubles, only singles.
I don't like it becuase I feel like the points are very short, and there is not very much movement. I just think its kind of boring.
The USTA is starting to promote doubles though. Starting in 2008 doubles counts toward your overall ranking. There's not gonna be seperate rankings, just one. Which I don't like at all, because its just promoting you to play more tournaments.

It's pretty obvious you are young and inexperienced. I think there are a whole lot of silly reasons you don't like it, but I also think you'll eventually come to lose them. That same feeling you get when you beat a good opponent in singles is just as good when you win in doubles, plus you have a teammate to enjoy it with. You probably haven't found that feeling in doubles yet, but when you do, it will take hold of you and you'll crave it just as much. And you'll have a teammate to build your skills with.
Actually, I'm jealous, you have that to look forward to.

do any of you guys just play doubles? i know thats a very rare case but i was just wondering.. Even though im not a great doubles partner i must say i love playing doubles especially when you can get wins under your belt. im so excited to be playing in national open doubles
however, i only play doubles when im entered in the singles tournament so i guess you might say im not a doubles freak freak but whenever the tournament i entered in has doubles, i jump on the chance to play
p.s, do any of you guys have a certain doubles player that you stick with every doubles tournament? i know of a couple players who do that, unfortunuately i haven't played with the same partner in two tournaments except with my brother which i play with him whenever there isn't another kid from my section who i know

another thing, in doubles most of the time young players feel like they have nothing to lose when in a doubles match so its a great time to get loose and sometimes you can even use it as a warm up for your next singles match if both events are part of the same tournament

Now having played USTA doubles, I have a greater respect for the game and sometimes even the players. Sometimes.

Yeah, I definitely hate doubles. It's got a lot more strategy in the game and i'm horrible at the net. I also can't get into a groove with my shots. I've been improving my game in doubles, but i'm still horrid and i'd much rather play singles.

Doubles is a great game when you respect your partner and both of your games compliment and match up well together.
The down side is that doubles doesn't offer as much exercise as playing singles does.

I don't really like doubles either..
However..there are some reasons why you should play it..
1 - mixed doubles - mixed doubles leagues.. It's fun to play with women in that kind of semi social setting. If your the guy your supposed to be good at it. This is the kind of thing you could do the rest of your life.
2 - league play. Even though I played in a 'singles' league I had to play alot of doubles. Again you want to be good so you don't let your team down.
