View Full Version : If you could drill your own string pattern...

What would the pattern be and how would you change the spacing?

I'd like to build my own racquet actually, just for the hell of it. :) I could do it in a weekend if I just used a solid piece of material. What scares me is having it implode during stringing or snap in half on the court.

I would go with a 16x20, but I would have to experiment with the spacing of the mains. My goal would be to produce the most consistent string bed possible with the existing head shape. I hate it when the sweet spot is really hot and everything else is dead.

I would go with one of two patterns:

12*16, with a small head (90 si or less)

or

22 * 24, with a medium-to-small head (90-100 si)

I would go for 1 x 1

I would go with 14x18 with the same spacing as the POG.

22x24 on a 90 to 100? That would be a nightmare to string and power would be about zero!

The POG seems about like as open as you'd wanna go unless you used 15g strings or thicker.

I guess to tame the sweetspot you just increase the # of strings there, right?

I'd experiment with an 18X18 pattern just for fun.

Id have the 14*18 of the POG mid in a k90

Anyone ever tried to build a racquet? Doing a custom mold w/ fiberglass or such seems really messy and time consuming. Making a wooden frame seems easy, but would you really wanna play w/ it?

Man, I would LOVE to try one of those! That sounds about ideal to me.

The woodies have been done before. The fiberglass molding, I personally considered... I decided not to because I just got bored with the idea.

I'd want to try something extremely open like a 16x16 to see how much insane spin I could get.

edit: o cool, i'm a "professional" now :D

Yeah seriously, not a bad idea at all. I donno, ive genreally been happy with the spacing of the rackets i've used (especially the 16 x 18 in my ps 85) although i woulda appreciated the ncode 90 (my old racket) having similar spacing to the k90 now (and a smaller pallet wouldn't hurt in copifying federer either).

build your own racket... i once thought of this when i was first starting out in tennis and all i thought about was equipment and technology, like what would a racket look like with 100 in head, o3 at 10, 1, 5, and 7, and flexpoint holes at 3 and 9, and an isometric head! haha crazy thoughts... but i would go... probably 18X20 a little more spaced in the middle and tighter going out on a mid size all graphite racket. but that's just me

18x20 would be more harsh on a 72 RDC frame - PD, etc. some might be able to avoid the polys more often though... opening the pattern on head racquets seems like a common request though. i wonder why that hasn't been done?

Anyone hr know, if vantage will produce a custom order racket say, 105sqin w/ a 12x16 string pattern (i.e as Woodforde uses)?
