How many hours a day do you practice when you seriously try to improve your skills? I started playing tennis for about 2 months and I am very impatient about my progress. I practice about 1 hour everyday but I found out that I can't do it any longer -- not from exhaustion but from my muscle pain in my thumb and a bit on the wrist. Maybe my muscle isn't accustomed to the usage yet?

I hope i could put 2 hours a day practice in the future.

What are you people doing when you try to rapidly develop ur skillz?

your body probably cant handle the stress yet.

i practice with the team after school for about 2.5-3 hours, then i might hit after taht for an hour or so.

i usually practice about 2 hours then go on to serves for about 1 hour

If you been playing an hour a day for 2 months and your muscles can't handle more yet it's probably due to some bad technique. You should be able to practice for 2-3 hours by now. Unless you are using a ball machine or something.

During my High School season (just ended) I would practice two hours with the team then sometimes go down to my own courts and hit serves afterwards. On weekends I usually play 1-2 hours on serves and drop feeds to myself. If I get a hitting partner I'll usually play an hour.

I used to practice for at least 3 hours a day. Nowadays, I practice my serve for about 2 hours a day.

Oh, I only started practicing everyday for 2 weeks so far. Before the past 2 weeks I play once a week, and most of that time I spent running around picking up balls. :p I asked 'cause I just want to see what other people are doing so that I have an idea of what is reasonable.

Just try to get a rest day in the week when you recover. After my season ended I had a nice rest period of about a week. I slept all the time I was practically dead on my feet.

Lesson learned: More rest during tennis is wise.

All in all I usually practice as long as my body will let me.

If you wanna go pro then usually practice can take up to 6-7 hours but not at full intensity all the time of course from what I know.

i play like 2-3 hours with my tennis team mon-fri and usually i'll hit with someone for another hour after that. On the weekends i play like 2 to 3 each day so like 6 hours on the weekend

it is important to hit ALOT of balls. but when things are getting to the serious time you need to be playing matches just as much as you need to practice!

About 2-3 Hours. Once i played for 5 but that was with the ball machine!

3.5-4 hours per week at most.

hmm...be sure to get your mechanics worked out if your wrist hurts. it shouldnt be hurting...

I rally, play matches, and practice serving on the weekends for 5-6 hours each day

You guys play a freakish amount! I play 2-3 times a week for on avg 2-3 hours.

played 6 hours a week for the past 2 weeks, and then I was exhausted and interest was gone a little.

I think 4 hours a week is just good and fresh enough for me. u gotta work on your fitness besides hitting. and u won't have much time unless u don't work or study at all.

Yeah most of you are either single, have VERY understanding partners or don't have jobs yet. If I practiced 10+ hours a week my wife would probably think I was doing something I shouldn't. ;-) That said, I like to practice at least once a week with a coach, or hitting drills, keeps me honest. Then 2 or 3 other days for 2-3 hours. I also do a combo of weight and cardio training twice a week usually.

5+ hours a week. use to be more, but its gotten hot down in S Cal.

If I were serious, and had the time and practice partners, I would play about 2 to 3 hours a day.

I play/practice 2x2 hrs on the weekend and if I can find somebody and the weather holds up another 1 or 2 hours during the week. I guess the first posters were on high school/college teams. SOunds to me like perhaps you were after the workload of an ambitious adult, with a relationship and a job. That being said, serious club players could probably do 1-2hrs a day 5-6 days a week.

If I could, 2-3hrs a day, I'm lucky if I get that a week. I reckon to go pro you should be doing double that, however its hard to estimate what "serious" should be for a player thats 2 months in. If its hurting you, its too much for now, have a couple of rest days and then go back and see how it feels. If it starts hurting again, there's something wrong with your technique

During summer I play around 2-3 hours on one day. I usually have 1 or 2 tennis-free days in a week, so it's a total of 10-18 hours a week.

During winter I play a lot less though , 2-3 days a week and 1-2 hours each time, which makes 2-6 hours a week. The training is more intensive during these sessions though.

05-14-2007, 11:56 PM
hmm....theres not enough hours in a day really if you are serious

05-20-2007, 04:22 AM
I used to do around 14 hours a week but now i'm i'm down to around 6 hours...coz i'm too dam busy (friggin assignments)

About 3 hours a day, usually doing serves and hitting around with a friend of mine. Last hour we usually play a quick match.

05-20-2007, 07:44 AM
on weeks with little homework, my friends and i would play from about 3:00pm to 8:00pm every day....but now we have too much homework =[

05-20-2007, 10:22 PM
i play about 2-4 hours everytime i play which is around 2-3 times a week. i usually practice serves for 1.5 hours.

im 24 now, and I play 4 to 5 times a week. about 1 or 2 hours a day on court.
Im a rock musician so my job times are very scattered, there is always time for tennis.

I remember when I was playing junior tennis, the summer of 95 and 96, I would go to a tennis camp from 1to5 in the summer heat of south texas, then go home, shower, and head back out from 7pm to 10pm. 5 days a week. it was awsome, I got pretty good.

I mean. If you are really serious - Quit your job, cancel all your appointments, forget your friends and take illegal "energy" pills! You could be practicing 22 hours a day. You ask "What about the last 2 hours?".. Well, those are when you EAT + downtime because of your stomach. If you begin playing at the age of 0 days, you would have 128 480 hours of tennis when you reach the age of 16 and turn pro! Man, you would easily outnumber anyone on the ATP-tour today, you should actually double-baghel Federer by then!

I exercise a total of 15 hours each week.. Which 9 of them are tennis. The rest are cardio and strength.
