Federer has been aggressive and is coming to net more than he's ever done even at Wimbledon. I think he's finally realized -

1. grinding on clay is not efficient and is best left to bumrooters who can do nothing else.

2. he has to sharpen up his netgame on clay to get ready for Nadal. He also did a lot of SV in Hamburg.

3. GOAT's come to net.

So basically, in the QF's of a slam which he's supposed to be under a lot of pressure to win, Fed is practicing tactics and tuning up his game.

Basically right. Although #1 is a little slanted and dismissive.

Fed was toying with Robredo, using him as practice just like you said. Then he realized that Robredo is a mofo on clay and got breadsticked. Righted the ship, won the match.

Good points. Watching Fed's matches in previous French Opens, it seemed to me he was intent on beating the claycourters at their own game. Don't know if it was pride or he just wanted to play on clay the way the best clay players play or what...

Anyway, this year, I'd really like to see him play the best he's capable of in order to WIN THE THING!! :D
