Pretty interesting, seeing as apparently height is key to a fast serve..

No IBM doesn't officially supply anything these days except processors, chips, and designs from their fabs. They are a sponsor of the GS events. It is widely regarded by touring pros that the radar gun at the French, Wimbledon, and a few Davis cup events are overly juiced. Former touring pros such as Daren Cahil has gone as far as having discussing on-tv-commentary with other former touring pros about their own fastest serves and which events the radar guns are juiced.

well, i guess if the radars are juiced for these two, they would also be juiced for the other players in the draw, so that's not an excuse.

They could be recalibrated, nice try though.

Aside from the fact that others above 6' still can't hit top speeds anywhere near 150MPH, it is improbable (and read impossible) for players of lower serving caliber to achieve similar speeds.

sure......

what are you talking about? height does no make that much of an effect on serve speeds on the pro tour. being tall just gives you more clearance to GET the ball in the when they hit 145+ mph bombs

Donald young @17 and 5'8 hit 135 mph
Oliver rochus is 5ft'5 and he hit a 136 mph serve.

Technique and experience is the key factor to reach those high mph serves not muscling the ball in with a semi western grip like most people on these boards do and .

Haha. I am glad you are quick to dismiss anyone elses thoughts and supply us with your own blanket statements.

Indeed. Because he can't hit 150.
I believe he never hit ANYTHING above 140, heck, perhaps 135, and now, all of a sudden, adds 10 mph to his serve? and only ONCE in a match?

And Guccione and Dent have hit 150s before. Karlovic was close with 149, but both of them have HUGE serves, while Ferrer doesn't. I wouldn't be surprised if Thomas Johansson, or Ivan Ljubicic or Almagro hits a 150... but watching Ferrer hitting a 150 is like seeing Nalbandian hitting a 150.

And I'm not American.

The serve stats for the match:

Fastest serve:

Deuce court:
Wide: 180 kmh
Body: 244 kmh !!!
T: 193 kmh

Adv court:
Wide: 185 kmh
Body: 184 kmh
T: 181 kmh

So, he didn't reach 125 mph on ANY serve, and all of a sudden clocks 25 mph MORE!!?? And he had only 1 ace to the body serve... and was it the 244 kmh?

Ferrer can't add 25 mph to a single serve all of a sudden, adlis. It was malfunctioning. Readed the wrong speed.

http://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/showpost.php?p=1489453&postcount=18

And the average speed for that body serve to the deuce court was 181 kmh ... so, we have to assume he felt like hitting one serve 60! kmh faster?

Just goes to show the only reliable measure of serve speed is high speed video analysis. Other wise radar guns are used as a reference.

You don't have to be excessively tall to serve big, it does help though.

Though the taller you are the better your serve should be. But from what I've heard and seen the radar guns at the French are off (or "juiced").
