Yes you have to be a USTA member to join tournaments, but you will still have to pay the price of the tournaments.

Your exposure as a player will be much better with the USTA. The benefits aren't really that great (Smash Magazine<Tennis mag, the shop's sorta lame.) It's the best (and most) official place to find tournaments. Some tournaments won't require you to be a USTA member, but they probably do not "get" you anything as a player other than some experience.
I know it's sorta lame and it's not like joining some uber-awesome club, but it's the way you do things here I guess.

cool, thanks for the replies. maybe i'll just join for one year to see how it is like and then decide because i am playing high school tennis so i am not all that in need of the experience but i need to find some tournaments to play during the summer. so what are the average cost of a tournament anyone know?

We have a thread on that (well sort of, it gets brought up in most of them) and the prices vary a lot. Some kids pay 60+ bucks for lower level tournaments while others pay 25-35 for tournaments at basically the same level. My state, fortunately, seems to be on the less costly end of the spectrum.
The only real way is to check out the USTA website (if you're a member) and look at some of the entry fees. The higher the level of the tournament, the more money you should expect to pay.

No I don't think so. Also you have to have a USTA ranking either nationally or sectionally to be considered for sponsorship by all companies if you were thinking aobut it.

Actually, I have 10 issues of tennis magazine as well as their USTA mag coming for joining recently. Yes, the benefits aren't great, but I mainly joined it to get to play tournments. I joined during the FO special offer of $25. that's what it should be all the time and more would join.

No problem, and I think I speak for all of us when I say that I understand. Most of us probably went through a very similar situation to what you're going through now so we know what it's like trying to convince a parent. Some may not because their parents were a major role in their development as a player, but I don't think most of us are fortunate enough to have been in that boat.
I am not sure about the tennis mags and the usta mag. I do know that there was a special offer during the french open (like dunlop's post said) but it may be over now that the french has finished. Wimbledon's off and running though, so you may have a chance.
As a junior member, we get (basically are stuck with) smash magazine INSTEAD OF tennis magazine. Adults receive tennis mag, and no matter how much you ask you can't get tennis mag. Smash blows, but oh well.
I would just join for a year to see how things go. If you like it, renew your membership towards the end of your year. If not, at least you gave it a shot and won't ever have to think, "What if I joined?"

I went with one year during that special they ran during the FO. Don't know if they are running that anymore. I thought i'd give em a try, then see how it went before spending the money. If I feel it's helpful to me, then i'll rejoin next year. good luck!

Regular price is $18 a year for juniors under 19, and $40 regular price for adults. They may have specials now and then like during the FO.
