What was the greatest match you ever saw?

I know it's cliche', but Federer vs. Sampras always gets me. Sampras was never put in that situation before, and Federer was not in a somewhat recognizable position until this past Wimbledon.

I don't have the greatest. But there is a match I ended up watching
the most # of times:

1993 US Open Quarter-final Sampras vs Chang.

Absolute all court tennis (from both players) that has everything in tennis.
Great baseline power, beautiful S&V, athletic net plays, amazing serve
returns, great running. And it ends with a zoning from one player
(Sampras) who overcame mental block on another player( Chang ).
It has almost all elements of a classic tennis.

Most of mine have been named, I'll just add:

anytime Pete and Andre played in New York

Nadal-Roddick, Davis Cup, 04, Seville - it was the first time I ever saw Rafa play. Carlos Moya went on to say about that match, that it was the beginning of Rafa, it "unleashed the beast"

Nadal-Federer, Rome Final, 05 - Fed had match points, but Rafa won and tied Vilas' streak at 56(?). Who could believe that streak would end at 81?

Venus Williams - Lindsay Davenport, Wimbeldon Final, 05 - I was pulling for Lindsay, but it was a great match, it was not decided till the last moment.

That is definitely one of my favorite matches, however i can't believe Agassi lost in the 5th set against Rafter in the 2001 Wimbledon Semi's. He had about 10 break point opportunities while Rafter had about 2.

Federer vs Roddick 1/25/2007
I think differently from you guys, it seems. I prefer "an hour and a half of pure genius"(quote from commentator) over close contests involving players getting to a fifth set with a crazy scoreline. This match simply defined the term one-sided in every way imaginable, and against the best Andy Roddick we've seen since 2005. As Thomas Blake said, "there's nothing you can do." When Federer plays at that level, there's nothing that can be done against him, which is why it's so amazing to watch him come up with those shots over and over and over...

I also like the 6-0 7-6 6-0 match but that was more of a forehand exhibition. Also played against Hewitt at his absolute best.

Roddick made Fed look good. Its almost comical how good Roddick can make others look sometimes. Gasquet hits 90(!) winners vs him at Wimbledon , Andreev hits 60 forehand winners at the French, Bagdhatis & Gilles Muller & Murray hit an inordinate amount of winners vs him in their wins over him at the AO & US Open & Wimbledon last year & '05.
Could all this be a coincidence? That so many are in the zone vs him, having their career best matches vs him, hitting more winners than almost anyone has ever hit against another top pro? I don't think so, he has a horrible court sense, positioning, etc. And when he approaches the net, I think any pro has a better than 50/50 shot of passing him.
And I've never seen a more predictable 2nd serve from any big server in the history of tennis. He may as well serve underhand, they all know where its going.

80 and 81 Wimbledon finals between Mac and Borg.

Goran over Rafter in the Monday Wimbledon final!

72 Forest Hills (US Open) final. Nasty over Ashe in 5.

Vilas losing to Orantes in the US Open semi, 1975. Remarkable late-night comeback. Then Orantes goes on to spank Jimmy in the final the next day.

Mac over Jimmy 75 in the 5th, US Open semi of 1984.

Pete over Courier at the Oz Open. Crying. Acing. Rallies. passing shots. Something for everyone in the family.

Guga over Russell at RG was a fun ride.

Pete over Guga at Key Biscayne.

Agassi over Marko Baghdatis at the open was awesome, as was Dre over Blake 76 in the 5th at the Open.

ATP Tour WC in Hanover. Pete over Boris in 5.

ATP final 98: Corretja coming back to beat Moya in 5.

Davis Cup (too many to mention, but here are a couple legendary matches I remember either live or on the tv): Mac over Mats in St. Louis. 5 sets, 5 hours.
Boris over Mac in Connecticut.
Boris over Agassi in Germany.

Copa Davis! Doubles! Pete and Mac over the Swiss guys in the final.

Ashe shocking Jimmy in the 75 Wimbledon final.

Rosewall over Laver in the WCT final.

Many more. But if I had to pick one, it would be the Boris / Pete one from Hannover.

Agassi vs Rafter in the 2000 and 2001 Wimbledon semfinal, both won by Rafter.

Agassi vs Rafter in the 2001 Aus Open semifinal, won by Agassi.

Great contrast in styles. They had great baseline rallies (yes, Rafter was able to hang surprisingly well with Agassi), and great points at the net. They had tons of drama. They were contested by two of the biggest stars in the game.

My older brother in law would say Conners Pernfors (sp?) in '87 though... the amount he raved on about it when i brought it up in conversation the other day made me surprised none of the older clientelle on here have mentioned it.

Well, back on topic, I'm sure people will mention the Capriati/Seles US Open semi from about fifteen years ago.

I also wanted to mention another match I saw live that rocked. Pat Mac against Connors in the first round of the 91 Open. Saw most of it live from the cheap seats. Pat looked great. Went home late in the third. Got a pizza on the way to the house. Ate it with some friends in front of the TV as Jimmy took it in five. Hell of a match, even though I was not wild about the result.

Connors marched on to the semis.

Agassi/Blake was the best match I've seen. It was pretty much like watching a movie. It's the only match that, when it was over, I just stared at the television screen speechless. I went to sleep that night thinking about it.

Agassi/Baghdatis was the second best. I watched Agassi/Blake with other people, but I watched Agassi/Baghdatis alone, and it's the only match I've ever become physically involved in; I jumped up and down, I fell on the floor in agony, I yelled out. It was amazing. Actually, that's not true; I was also physically involved in Agassi/Pavel, I guess because both matches had everything on the line. I couldn't bring myself to watch Agassi/Becker. I just had a bad feeling about that match before it even started, so I went on here to see the play-by-play, and everyone was saying that Agassi was hurting out there, so I just didn't even turn on the TV.

Safin/Federer might have been the highest quality match I've seen, tennis-wise. Both guys were at their best. It's funny to look back at the first set with those commentators talking as if the match was a done deal and Safin had no chance.

Sampras/Becker indoors in Germany was fantastic. They both had very similar games and were hitting winners left and right.

Sampras v Courier 1995 Australian Open QF.

Sampras comes back from 2 sets down to win at about 1.30am.

Sampras cries on court when someone sitting in the crowd near me shouts "Come on Pete. Do it for Tim".
that was so emotional, i felt so sad.

i still think Safin vs Federer at 05 AO was amazing.
oh and for some reason i cant remember who Sampras played and where it was when he was throwing up and won the match when his opponent double faulted?

Ahhhh, so you're a woman, then?
Or a gay man?

That said, i can't believe you old timers haven't posted:
39yo Jimmy Connors vs Aaron Krickstein in the 1991 US Open 4th round.

If you've ever wanted to see a man win a match purely on adrenaline from the crowd, it's this one.

I have a tape of that match taped in 1991, and the best thing about watching it was the cheesy commercials, especially the Agassi rock star commercials.

for me :

Safin vs Federer AO semi 2005 - a very high quality match with both players playing their A game . It makes other mathes look like juniors....

Agassi vs Rafter Wimby matches - very nice contrast of styles with a great baseliner and a great S & V player going at it .

Lendl-Cash 84 US Open
Lendl - Mac - 84 French
Pernfors - Cash - Davis Cup Final (86?)
Chrissie - Martina - 84 French
Hana - Martina - 85 US
Agassi-Rafter - 2000 Wimby
Fed-Safin - AO 2005

These are the ones I'll be raving about as a senile old man.
