View Full Version : Who do you wish you could play like?

I wish I had the shot-making ability of Baghdatis, the guy strikes a great ball, and to hit a backhand like Gasquet just once in my life would be a pleasure. Whose game would you love to bring down to your club next week? Who do people say you play like?

Even though Roddick isn't my favorite player, i've always liked the way he plays. Not necessarily his plays, but the way he hits his shots and his technique. I've modeled my forehand and somewhat my serve after him.

Who I wish I could play like? Monfils. I tend to slide a lot on any surface to return a wide or short ball but I could never get off the shots that he does while sliding.

As for who people say I play like, I don't get a lot of that but i've heard Roddick once or twice, understandably, considering I model my shots after him.

Good thread, I look forward to reading other answers.

i wish i could play like djoko. he has it all and is a dangerouse weapon w/ basically everything. he is an amazing shotmaker, grinder, net player all around. he gets to the semis of wimbly and french, u know he is good at every surface.

ps:had he not spent 10 hrs. in the 2 matches before nadal, he would have taken nadal out at least in 4

Sampras. keep everything including the slice backhand , just add Gasquet's or Edberg's topspin backhand. ... And Safin's height , just to make the serve just a little more devestating.

sampras' serve, federer's forehand and volleys, and gasquet's backhand. i would have the most beautiful game.

Even though Roddick isn't my favorite player, i've always liked the way he plays. Not necessarily his plays, but the way he hits his shots and his technique. I've modeled my forehand and somewhat my serve after him.

that's exactly the same thoughts as one of my friends. he loves the way roddick serves and hits his forehand. but aside from those aesthetics, he wouldn't imitate anything else. as for me, i hate the way roddick hits his shots. i just think it's so sloppy and so lacking in finesse. but to each his own. :)

this brings up another question: who would have the ugliest game? imo, it would be sampras' backhand, nadal's forehand, and roddick's serve. don't flame me. :P don't get me wrong, they're some of the strongest of their kind. ugly in an aesthetic point of view.

edit: actually i change my mind about sampras' backhand and nadal's forehand. i know there are some uglier ones.

Stefan Edberg.

But I don't really play anything like him... nobody's really told me I play like anyone else. I finish most points at the net or w/ a forehand though.

I really try do play like him...but my serve "motion" (sorry i'm italian...) is inspired by roddick...

John McEnroe. Most beautiful game ever. The youngsters need to get a tape of his defeat of Connors in the Wimbledon final in 1984, it was the best single day anyone has ever had. Remember what Fed did to Bjorkman last year at Wimbledon? Well, JMac put an even bigger whipping on Connors.

This would probably be my final answer, I'm always trying to get that kinda controlled ferocity into my shots.

That said I'm told I'm more like Lleyton Hewitt- chasing down everything and getting the hard balls back. Think I've got some work to do, ahem...

heck yes.

either that or, Roddick's serve combined with Sampras' serve somehow, Gasquet's technique on his backhand with Federer's shot making ability, Roddick's forehand from back when it was really good lol, McEnroe's and Sampras' volley skills, and the stamina and footwork of Nadal and Federer.

I'm going against my user name and saying Andre Agassi.

I have a decent 1-handed backhand and can rip it up the line once in a while and defend with slice but I'd love to be in a match against my friend who always goes to my backhand and just drive it crosscourt, deep, time after time after time. Not to bad on the forehand side either. :)

Nastase. With the heart of Boris or Jimmy, the head and serve of Sampras. And the volleys of Johnny Mac and Edberg.

Well, to narrow it down to one guy, it would be Lew Hoad. Pancho Gonzales, Rod Laver, Ken Rosewall and Roger Federer.

So yeah, uhm, Federer.

But when off balance I'd like to be able to hit that most heinous BH pass of Nadal's, too.

But Sampras had a better serve...why?

You know what I just thought about this. Sampras serve was so bad *** I mean his pace and precision was amazing. The amount of pace that roddick can generate as well as his compact swing impresses me more than sampras classic serve stroke.

Lemme ask u, how do you go about working on something like this? He cracks the ball, and to generate the spin u need to get it in, u have to.. well, crack it.. For me, I think I'd spend 3 months endlessly hitting long before even breaking level with it!

If it was possible for me to channel the best shots in tennis it'd go somthing like this:
Sampras's serve/overhead
Federers Forehand
Agassi's backhand
McEnroe's volleys
Chang's foot speed

As for who I play like... I have a tendancy to go after my shots and grind out points like Blake (I guess its a CT thing...). Only difference is I tend to hit a flatter 2handed BH like Agassi and build my service games around hard spins and placement rather over the top power.

Although a funny note that I'm sure will be lost on anyone younger than the age of 25... I've been told my service motion resembles that of Roscoe Tanner's (lets hope thats the only similarity I have w/ him ha!) but has the kick and depth of Patrick Rafter.

I wish I could hit a backhand overhead like the one Federer hit against Nadal in the Wimbledon final, as if it were nothing more than a walk in the park, and then walk back to the baseline without a hint of celebration.
