View Full Version : 30-15 is not your ad
Sorry, but this bugs me every time I see it. Ad(vantage) means you need one point to win. 40-30 can be your ad, but not 30-15 (even if 30-30 can be called deuce).
40-30 is not "ad"; it is...40-30. Ad scoring begins after deuce, fyi.

Nobody ever said 30-15 is your ad!

40-30 is not ad in; 30-40 is not ad out. Why? Because if someone is 'ad' up on me it means they won 5 points (at least) against me. I will never credit someone 5 points against me if they only won 3. You got to earn points against me.
Ahhh, yeah, sure, whatever you say, norcal.

Hmmm...I always thought 40-30 was "Ad In" as in advantage to the server. I suppose one could argue that Ad in and out are used after you reach 40-40 Deuce. Never occurred to me to think about it.
Anyone ever use 5 instead of 15? I do it all the time from way back when I was teen. No one seems to object.
I also find that I am the one calling score because today's "kids" don't seem to understand this bit of etiquette.

yeah, i say 4-5 instead of 40-15. I've always played on public courts and that's how it always was called even though we all knew it was wrong technically.

I don't think I've ever heard of 4 for 40. 5 for 15 is a pretty common substitution--at least in the 70s it was.

i cant stand the slang, i really dont know why. but, i mean how hard is it to just say 40-30, etc, etc???
i used to play some older guys that would constantly call out ad in/out in replacement of 30-40/40-30 and it drove me crazy because everytime i played tournaments people got on your case if you didnt do it properly. lol. i got into an argument with the people i played with one night because they started reffering to it as ad out. i got pissed, lol, simply because i knew damn well we hadnt hit deuce. and they kept arguing with me that it WAS ad. all would have been fine if everyone would have just stuck with the proper terms. there were other times the slang got in the way of the score. in fact i can think of numerous times, but doubt anyone really wants to here, lol.

Ok, so we all agree:
15
30
40
Deuce
Then, Ad in or Ad out (I assume you agree that Ad in is the way to say it, and not "my ad." Right?
You can't get to Ad(vantage) until you've reached Deuce, and Deuce is 40-40.
What do you think of the no ad scoring where you have to use 1,2,3, and 4?

I get confused when they say 3-5 and 4-3. WTF.

It is kind of amusing that you never hear "five all" or "ad out" called at a professional tourney, but amateurs say it to look like "insiders".

I can understand why in professional tourneys they say "Advantage Federer" instead of "Ad in", but what do you say when you are playing? I suppose "My ad" would work.
I don't say Ad in to be pretentious, but instead out of habbit and convention. I find that I say Ad in at 40-30 and no one seems to find that confusing (but I never say 30-30 Deuce, but will say 40-40 deuce).

Actually, I am going to start saying "Advantage Bedford". How's THAT for pretentious?
We already say "second service" in a faux English accent after a let. Not to mention "sorry mate" in a faux Australian accent after an errant toss.

LMAO!!!! ADVANTAGE BEDFORD!!!!
Seriously, if you ever did that against me in a doubles match, I'd peg the bejesus out of you. That sounds so irritating. Something I think I'd like to try myself though.....

So who said in the first place that 30-15 was your ad?

No one. Cypo apparently had run into players who called score this way, however, and that led to a series of clarifications. Cypo's first comment is correct...you have have the advantage (or ad in) if you need just one point to win the game.
