What modern racquet is most close to this old legend?

Yep, the K is a good update to the 6.1 line - I've had a couple of the 6.1 Classics just about forever and the demo with the K was very familiar.

The Prince O3 Hybrid Tour also gave me some of that familiarity in two long demo sessions and I was even more comfortable with the Prince from the baseline than with my Wilsons. The Hybrid Tour for me was like a 6.1 Classic on a diet.

Just as an aside, does anyone know if the new K6.1 grommets fit the classic? Or if the HPS ones fit?

I think the bancroft classic 335 is of the same mold without pws ,it is a bit lighter, I have used both and they feel very similar.

I actually did not find the K6.1 to my liking. Still like my prostaff classics better. The K-factor seems too stiff and not as stable, though it does have more power with the same control.

The grommets for the k are listed separately from the ones that fit both the 6.1 Classics and 6.1 HPS. I'd assume that the k grommets are unique.
