try tossing a little higher, more behind the head, and swing to the sky.

Did you mean Eastern?

Yes, I hope he means western backhand perhaps as some people call it.

Your toss should be slightly to the left side of your head, and then you want to hit from the bottom left of the ball to the top right of the ball. This is what gives you kick.

1. i'm 5'11
2. i use a yonex rds 001
3. continental grip
4. My kicks are fairly above 5'5 ft.

If u want more kick, u gotta toss the ball more into the court and pronate more. Swing faster from right to left ( righty )

Also,
if you're not already doing it, use more legs and push up (jump) into the ball while serving. Use lots of wrist snap, too.

You should be able to hit any kick serve with a continental grip. The most severe grip to use would be an eastern backhand grip...but this will cause you to hit too much over the ball rather than brushing up the inside portion of the ball for a true kick.

If you can't do it with a continental...then you are doing something wrong in your swing path. (Usually opening up the shoulder plane too early or pulling down with the hitting elbow too soon.)

Just use the continental grip for the kick serve, all you do is give away your intentions if you use the eastern

It SHOULD be upwards while pronating left to right actually.

I tried hitting some kicks with a slightly eastern grip and it seemed to work well, sort of Becker style. It seemed the ball was held on the strings longer. It sounds counter-intuitive but it cut down on framing the ball.

I think ideally you want every toss to be the same as your other serves but rather thrusting forward you thrust more upward for the kick serve. Also remember if you cut across the top of the ball too much the ball will just dink downward into the net.

I need to follow my own advice.

Make sure you are bending your legs well aloowing for your back to be quite horizontal to the court.
