View Full Version : Would you play an ugly racket?

I know this is a stupid post since how it plays should be most important but would you play a racket you think is ugly?

A little background, I'm now playing again after quiting for about 3-4 years. I'm a pace player with solid but inconsistent groundstrokes (plenty of spin). I can generate all the power I need so control and feel is key. Former Doubles player so need an all court racket.

I have been playing a PS85 for the last 10-12 years and can't seem to find anything better, till last night. Tried a MicroGel Radical MP. Although very light I loved the feel of this racket. Very crisp and hit solid from the baseline and net. I LOVED how it served. First racket I have ever hit that hit flat serves like the PS 85 and Kick serves just as well too.

So, I think this racket is ugly!! Not to offend those who like it but I can't stand the paint job. I like the color scheme but not the shine and look of it. Am I just being stupid here? Anyone else ever in this situation?

Anyone have another racket suggestion that might fit the play and appearance test? I've tried the following and didn't like them; O3 Tour, O3 Black, Volkl DNX9, tried the Flexpoint Prestige and liked it some but didn't like it off the serves and didn't really like the Flexpoint (made the racket unstable to me). Have also hit the 002 Tour and liked the way it played but not as crazy about the feel of it.

Sorry for the long post but I would really like some ideas, or just tell me I'm stupid and I should play the Radical (nice name too, what is this the 80's). :p

You'll get used to the paintjob, especially if you love the racquet you're using.

I've played with the pro version, and I agree with the posters who suggest that it is an excellent frame.

Many of us don't have time to gaze into our naval, or indeed gaze at our tennis racket. If you like it, pick it up and play with it. Good luck!

When I read the title of this thread of thought of a Microgel racket :p

If it works, buy it. But as a former PS85 user you should give the K90 a chance before you make your decision ;)

I use the K95 and the Kfactor jobs are as ugly as they come. I much prefer the ncode paintjobs as they seem simpler and more classic.

First, I agree that its a great racket. Second, I would use one. When youre playing you wont be worrying about the cosmetics and if it bothers you that much, just paint it.

Thanks for the input. Maybe this begs the question, why all the colors, designs, etc. when so many of us like the classic simple designs? Is it the companies trying to sell product by making them recognizable? I would buy a RQ is Tour 1 tomorrow if it felt like the Radical (I will be demoing it so maybe it will). :-D Maybe they are appealing to the younger crowd and us old guys should just play the POG and PS85's. Oh well, I'm sure I would get used to anything overtime if it helps my game.

A guy on my team has used a PS Torch for several years now. If that isn't the definition of an ugly racquet, I don't know what is. One time I asked him, "does your son know you're using his racquet?". He laughed and said, "it's not pretty to look at, but it works for me".

MGEL Extreme color and head shape looks like an Alien Head! Come to think of it... the head looks similar to Ljubcic head! I think Head might have use him as an inspiration when they designed this racquet! LOL!

There is a limit to where I'll go. I'd rather suck than play with a pink racquet called the "Gypsy Rose" ;)

I agree with the others who say that the paint job will grow on you. When I asked for suggestions on racquets to demo from the kind posters on these boards several months back, one of the racquets that I was pointed towards was the Yonex RDS 001 mid. When I added it to my demo list, I had hoped that I wouldn't like it due to the loud color scheme. After demoing 12 racquets, I found nothing that I liked more than the RDS 001 mid and I have grown to actually like how it looks--especially with a white over grip. Anyway, that is another racquet that you should check out. I let a friend of mine who has played with the PS85 for years try it and he actually wants to switch to it now.

What difference does it make how it looks, as long as you can do your best with it is all that should matter. Hey if I found a very ugly racquet, and it improved my game, I would be very happy, hey it may also distract your opponent, which could be an added bonus!!I just started playing again 3-4 weeks ago, after a 33 year break from it, and my last racket was a woodie that I've seen in antique shops, so ugly is in eyes of beholder!

as with just about anything, the longer you are with it and using it the more it will grow on you. unless you end up not liking it... then it would prob end up looking more and more ugly to you... haha. but give it a few weeks at least and then see if your opinion changes.

Once I put a Tournagrip on a MG Radical.. I thought it looked pretty nice.. and the paint holds up too after a couple of accidental throws!

Having just gone through the Demo everything TW has and purchase a stick thing I thought I would throw this in.

At first I my thought process was I hope I do not like any ugly sticks.

After trying so, so many I quit caring and just wanted a stick to fit my game. And that I liked.

I was very close to a DNX4 which is pretty cool IMO, but luckily ended up with a Prince Ozone 4 which I think is awesome looking. Demo'd the Head Microgels and thought they were fugly, but if they would have fit my style of play I would have warmed more to them. Since I did not like the way they hit I still think they are fugly! lol.

Of course this is from a guy wearing the Addidas A3 Black and gold shoes! They call them gold but they look more like copper to me! But they fir my boat feet well and supported my lack of an arch and were 50% off so I was in!

Accidental throws?? lol. I throw my racquet so often...but not now that I am getting my Microgel Radical Pro, I won't be doing it anymore

Haha I guess if the raquet had a great personality, but seriously everybody has their own style.

Would I play a raquet that I found uglY?

Of course! If it helps my game out than what does it matter.

Would you rather win with an ugly raquet or lose with a 'handsome' raquet?

All the best, Jhonny

No they're not. Have you seen the price on the K90?

It's probably the best playing ugly racquet out there.

Sometimes playing with a frame you're cosmetically happy with makes you play better too.

I've used a hyper prostaff 6.5 for a while (though now I use the kteam). The HPS 6.5 is sparkly emerald green with an orange hoop: UGLY. but I play some of my best tennis with it. Also, the k colors grow on you. I hated it at first, but after playing it a while really got used to it.

Oh btw, the only good-looking racquet out there is the Pure Storm MP (all gens), not even the other Babs compare which makes me wonder if it has a specific designer doing them.

To be honest, no I wouldn't.

I think there is a point where it becomes ok... if it is REALLY UGLY it can become a distraction to your opponent and when you win, you can tell them it is all talent and not the racquet!!

You can be like... YES, I just beat you with my florescent Pink racquet... so you can take you "fancy Babolat" and go get some lessons!

I got beat by a guy (who foot-faulted by about 3fr... grrr) that used a Bandit OS, which is what my 2.0 gf uses... so I definitely noticed that and if it was pink I would have been even more pizzedoff!

Anyway, I used to care a lot more... but now I just care about specs and sale prices!!!

I have the same approach as to women - if I like to play with (live with), appearance is not important

Funny thread. Just curious. How many of you, who'd play with ugly racquets, married or would marry an ugly woman?

There are not ugly women...only you do not drink enough
Now seriously - it is too much subjective to speak about. She must be attractive just for YOU, does not matter others.

I hate the look of the K Factors but I am considering buying the K 6.1 95X, because of the 27.5inch and 360 SW. If the look really bugs me and I love the racquet I will just give it a flat black PJ

It would be nice if racquet manufacturers would go back to the days of single color or two color fade paintjobs, with just some narrow stripes on the face as the design. Current racquets design looks more like kids toys/advertising billboards than precision tools.

I agree, the ProStaff original paint scheme is great. I wish there were new racquets made with such simple clean designs.

i have a thing with ugly racquet names. would not like to buy a Prince or even Babolat (i did use a PD for a month but would never buy one). Most names suck. Wilson is kind of neutral - the least sucky racket manufacturer name.
