Would a normal pair of vice-grips work like a starting clamp??? i almost hate to ask. I actually cringe thinking about it, but if you are careful, etc... would it work?

Can't believe I'm actually considering this, but...
If you used something like leather pads between the surface of the vice grips and the string it *** MIGHT *** do okay. Problem with vice grips is that they are generally heavy.
Best thing is to either buy starting clamp from TW:

Or e-mail me and I'll point you in direction of good clamps from other US source.

I'd use leather not rubber (old grip?). Don't know much about klippermate... I have a crank machine - sorry.
