This is a video of a guy who I train with, this is his University tennis video. What do you think of his strokes?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGxxrr_k3IM

I know when i hit with him he just about breaks the ball. Any thoughts on NTRP rating?

Even though he leans back little too much, does not turn his shoulders
quite as much as would recommend, and is not agressive wiht his feet on his vollies, he is at 5.5 easy.
There are few things that he can improve, but still, I would say yes D1 prospect.

Gosh, how can somebody get this good. I'd guess he is a 5.5-6.0, btw.

Whew. I'll be one of the first to say 3.5.

Not really.

But... I don't know. How can you gauge ability on this? How can you tell when he misses? He reminds me of some run-of-the-mill freshman D3 players, but maybe his actual match play is better? I'd say 4.5-5.0, but would absolutely, positively not say 5.5. I feel that any experienced 5.5 would blow him off the court. Same with most D1 players.

Of course, there is a lot of overlap at these high levels of play, and I could see him playing for a lower ranked D1 team...

don't like his FH, no backswing, leans back too much, looks like a clay ct stroke
BH is amazing, where does that acceleration come from?
volleys look like a clay courter's too
smash is way to wristy
serve is again amazing with a late acceleration point

obviously a very solid player, good luck to him

Its seems really hard to tell with videos like these. Mainly because all the bad footage is edited out... you only get to see his best.

he really shoulda of shown wat his fh and bh were doin... id say his forehand beats the backhand... he never leans into a shot on his backhand... always falling back after shot.

Good player though... shoulda shown some more variety in serving!

I'VE SEEN THIS KIND OF THREADS OVER AND OVER AGAIN.........a practice session it's just that, no way to judge someone hitting with no pressure.

Here he looks like a 10.0

That is true. College would also look for previous matches won, awards, ranking, etc. got to give something concrete, video of matches.

He looks pretty solid. I would not nip-pick the techniques of the strokes. There are players who are very unorthodox to the way they play. As long he doesn't injure himself, he should simply fine tune his game.

Difficult to say from the video. I have seen him his the 120s but im not sure that it would be "easily" into the 120s.

I agree, but at the same time he wants to advertise his ability as well as he can, just from this video wouldn't you be interested in scouting him? You don't see McDonald's advertising their food for how bad it is for you. You understand what I'm saying?

JBennet: If you are asking what might make the video better for recruiting, I would say some behind the player footage playing a good player would be very helpful.

I would say 5.5 player. He is putting serious heat on his groundstrokes. (nice smooth strokes). His footwork is very good, as well as his volleys, and he has an excellent overhead.

He needs to work on his foot faults, They are illegal. :)
