Serving in doubles alley

Are you allowed to serve from outside of the singles lines in doubles? I have a friend that was doing that today, and i told him it was illegal. He told me that it was actually legal and continued to do it. Who was right?

Legal. As long as he's inside the doubles sideline.
Serving from the doubles alley is illegal in singles.
