View Full Version : TW Long Island New York Chapter.

Ok all. As your self appointed fearless leader, I have started up our official TW Chapter. There are too many players on our little island who are not connected with each other.

I want to start this by creating a directory of players, so if you want to join in the network, please post your ability level (Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced is fine) E-mail address, and location (area of county is fine) as well as preferred parks and clubs you belong to so we can all contact each other.

I have also set up a Yahoo Group.

http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/lihitters/

Is the address for the group, please go and join it, I will approve immediately, just mention you are from TW or LI.

With the group we will be able to talk to each other all at the same time, and be able to coordinate who is playing with whom and where.

Ideally every day we would pick out one or two locations and everyone would just show up and however many people made it, we would just split up and do drills, match play, hitting practice, whatever.

Obviously this would be a fair weather thing, and in the wintertime we can coordinate playing indoors (Dubs is great because cost is split 4 ways.).

I will invite many friends of mine who do not frequent the boards aswell, and encourage you all to do the same.

The goal is to have fun, and improve together.

That was some serious frustration I had after playing. I was looking through my old stuff and I found the sheet dated 1998 where it said I was being bumped up to 5.5. Right now I'm not even a 5.0, and last night it just got the best of me. One reason I waited so long before playing again is that I was worried it would be more frustrating than fun, and that was definitely true last night. Sorry for ranting here.

Dude, seriously, lets get together and talk a bit, and hit. I went through a lot of the same stuff, blew out my shoulder at 17 and couldn't play for 6 years. Came back to playin at 23 hitting 50-60mph serves, frustrating as hell. Went for some mental coaching, and learned some really cool stuff, and met some great people along the way.

In the beginning I left practice sessions about in tears, but every week my good days were better, and my bad days weren't as bad.

I am still not content with where I am, and never will be as that is my personality. But I realize that it is the competition, and the journey.

We will help each other get better, all of us, that is why I started this group. And still meet some awesome people, and have time to knock down a few beers and play some drunken dubs just to remember that even though we take it very seriously, it is just a game.

Oh yea, I am down right entertaining drunk on the court. Our drunken doubles included me.

1. Hitting myself in the nether regions on a serve, and crumpling to the court.
2. Bursting out into song, singing "I Feel Pretty"
3. Reciting the entire "I am William Wallace" speach from Braveheart.
4. Celebrating and endzone dancing after thinking I hit an ace only to watch in dismay as it came floating back off my opponents frame for a 2 mph double bounce winner.

The rest of the day was a bit hazy, but I am sure there was more.

JO11yroger, where in Long Island are you? I live in CT part of the year and I would love to school you with my extraordinary tennis skills one day. I don’t have a car, but I have a boat, and it’s usually faster to travel from CT to Long Island on a boat than in a car.

Nope, leaps and bounds better. You would have been bored. My last doubles of the night was pretty good, but they placed me in mixed doubles back to back with, how do I say this lesser comp. I felt bored at times. But again the last match was good. One of the guys had a very good forehand and a good kick serve. Enjoyed going back and forth against him. 1 regret using my new lm midplus with those crappy strings they came with. Mondays order of business is on my lunch brake I must visit the Woodbury dudes and get a new rig set up.

J, dumb question for you and probably does not belong in this thread but here goes. I just switched to the LM mid plus from the LE OS RAD, I think i mentioned this to you already, but anyway my question is I have been mishitting a few shots, is this a common occurance when one switches for an OS to an LM and how long can I expect this to happen? Also is there anything in particular that I should really focus on to try and reslove this issue? Thanks man

Ya, it is legit. Usually it is the weight/swingweight/balance that is going to jive with you moreso than the actual headsize. If you hold the two racquets up on top of each other and see where the frame is on the MP compared to where the frame is on the OS, you are not supposed to be hitting the ball anywhere near there anyhow.

Because your new frame will swing quicker due to its lower Swingweight, you will be early on shots to begin with, and clip them at the bottom of the frame (The lower edge facing down at the ground) or at 12oclock. More than likely knowing your swing mechanics, your problem is that in addition to the lighter frame, you are starting to swing hard too early in the stroke.

I have a tourney this weekend, so as soon as I know when my matches are, I will book a court for us.

All you really need is a decent hitting session against a slow hitting consistent partner, to find where the middle of the racquet is.

I told my buddy matt to get in touch with you aswell, he wants to start hitting again a little over the winter so he is not totally screwed come springtime.

String the MP about 3lbs looser than you strung the OS and they will feel about the same. So 58 on the MP.

Ok guys, time to bump this thread and begin organizing our outdoor season kickoff party. I am thinking the second saturday in april. Would like to do bagels coffee etc, start at about 9 or 10am, snacks maybe pizza maybe a hero.

Last years end of summer shindig was a blast, and I think it would be great if we could get even more peeps out.

Dennis has told me that they put up "No Alcohol" signs after my antics last time, so this will have to be a dry party, or else we will just mix up bloody marys beforehand :)

Bluegrasser, You are bringing back many childhood memories.. Billy Blakes, Blowfish, clamming.. wow..lol. I grew up in Central Islip and as I kid during the summer I use to ride my Bike down to the East Islip Marina and go fishing. My Dad use to take me to the beaches to dig clams and then at night go crabbing off the piers at various marinas. My sister still lives in C.I. and when I go back, I do not even recognize the place, Things have changed so much.

That's cool - I lived in Oakdale - Jolly was nice enough to post some pics of my house, which is on this thread somewhere. We knew a guy who owned a ' Seafood res't on the bay and we used to go late at night to catch crabs. The way we worked was - a couple of long poled net scoops and a flashlight - shine the light on the water, the crab comes to the surface & gotcha !

Figure we start around noon, everyone bring one food or drink thing (nothing big, a bag of chips/pretzles, or a bottle of juice/12 pack of soda)

We play tennis, and BS until it gets old.

A bunch of us will probably go see Transformers in the Imax afterwards so if you are down, I will post the time, and you can buy tickets online.
