As some of you might know from "University of Michigan" thread in Odds sections, I am an engineering student at the U of M.
Well, as some of you might know, today is Halloween.

Before my 2:30 engineering class, we saw a kid dressed up as a ninja with what looks like a toy sword walking around the halls. We all got a good laugh from it and thought it was pretty funny.

So class starts at 2:30 and after a little bit, the ninja comes in the front door. He walks very sneaky and slowly behind the Professor's back and jokingly simulates an attack motion.

At this point, some of the students bust out laughing and even the professor smiles. The ninja was a student in the class, so he sits down and starts taking notes.

About half hour later, the ninja has a question and asks it. Then, another professor, who was not teaching at the time asks the ninja student:

"Is that a real sword?" and the ninja responds:
"uhhhhh no."

Then the professor asks if he thought it was funny. Some of the other students say they thought it was funny.

The main professors says it was highly inappropriate to simulate an attacking motion against the professor especially due to the Virginia Tech tragedy even if it was a joke.

During the break, the ninja obviously doesn't like the uncomfortable mood tried to leave. The main professor stopped him and checked the sword, which was real. Professor called the cops and the kid was arrested and taken away in handcuffs.

I feel really bad for the kid for getting arrested for a joke, BUT I feel that the professor's actions were right and justified. I'm kind of glad the professor was thinking about safety while most were thinking about jokes and fun.

What are your thoughts on this, and has anybody ever had some unfortunate Halloween experiences?

Maybe he was a real ninja...

He really didn't have a choice. If the kid would have hurt someone, they would have asked him why he didn't alert the police.

i agree with everything you said... except feeling bad for the student. if it was a fake sword, i would have, but not a real one. that is rediculous. i would not want a kid dressed up as a ninja walking around my school. i am glad the teacher made the call, that is his responsibility. what the cops do from there (question him then release him or take him into custody) is up to the cops. stupid decision by the student, good decision by the professor, imo.

the guy should have known better than to joke around with a real sword. what a tool.

Did he attack the police with his ninja sword and then use a smoke bomb and vanish into thin air? Thats what I would have done.

I don't understand the concept of 'halloween'.

Sadly and unfortunately, it was the right thing to do (alert the authorities) in this day and age. However, the kid should get off with a warning ... unless there's more to the story.

I think the professor did the right thing in calling the cops and escorting the kid away. The professor asked the kid in the ninja suit if the sword he had was real and he responded no. For this reason alone especially after the tragedy at Virginia Tech that the actions taken were appropriate.

Maybe he was a real ninja...

A real ninja would not have been so easily captured :p

And if he did get captured there is only one honorable way out :D

I think its ok if the sword was fake. Who the hell takes a real sword to class? He brought it upon himself....

when I said i felt bad for kid, I meant in that I felt bad that he didn't use his head before dressing up. Jeez, these people are trying to crucify me or something.
