Some of the courts I've played on are worse! There are cracks about a half-inch wide splitting the ad service court, so if you can place your serve on a dime, you can serve to the crack and get the ball to bounce parallel to the net. :)

Not to hijack Peter's thread but Noelle - try playing on public courts that double as ice covered hockey rinks in the winter. Made of rough concrete and have wire chain link fences for nets. I guess this is how the city encourages people to be active in the summer.

I don't think the court on which Peter was playing looks too bad; I assume it was a public court. I had a hit one one not much better this morning. One of the nice things about living in Aust seems to be the large number of free public courts - I have the choice of four of five locations within ten minutes from my house, all public and quite well maintained. They're all hard courts of course, but the local councils look after them pretty well, no-one steals the nets, you just turn up and have a hit.

Noelle, you would be surprised how many gorgeous public tennis courts there are if you go to rich suburban neighborhoods. I just got back from visiting my dad in Virginia and they have 10, beautiful, immaculate hard courts complete with lights, concave practice walls, singles and doubles courts. All this is totally open to the public at the local community center.

Superior_Forehand, like I said earlier in this thread, I don't live in the U.S.

In the Philippines, really well-maintained courts are usually found at exclusive country clubs or rich suburban neighborhoods which are closed to the public. Since the country is seismically active, it's also hard to keep a court's surface smooth because the ground shifts; it would take a lot of investment to maintain a court. Hence, the public courts I've been on look like the one in my picture. :D

No kidding. In Hong Kong tennis was so expensive, hence why i didn't start playing until I came to the States. Btw, those courts aren't really public, but they are cheap to play on. I've never payed for court time though since I always had friends at clubs or what not. I can also use the courts where I teach at. Another thing to note is that you can always find free courts in good shape at High Schools and Colleges....at least in Texas....

I played at central park this summer, so I know what you mean about having access to public courts there. man what a nightmare. There was this irritating guy who would check the underside of the shoes, and if you werent there 15 minutes early you'd get booted off. Good clay courts though

CP is a zoo really but the courts are in decent shape. You have the same bunch of old guys hanging there everyday though, threatening to throw a punch if they don't get their regular court and if you have a life, forget about playing there. The reservation system is useless so you have to be ready to waste 2 hours of your time waiting for a court...

I'm actually glad they check soles... You can't just go there with crosstrainers and expect to play on hardthrough, man...

Next time you come here in the summer, check out the Riverside clay courts. Those are public courts too, red clay, friendly crowd. They have a website...

At the far end in my pic, you can see there are some shell courts. They're for members of the tennis club only though. The dirty, cracked hard courts are for public use (minimal fee).

But the girl at the far left of the picture, standing on the baseline in the white shirt and pale yellow skirt (holding a Prince Thunderlight?) appears to have a nice, callipygian backside.
She was actually using a Dunlop (looked like an M-Fil 200). The pic doesn't show this, but she looked about 14 years old. ;)

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Yeah, i'm in prison. We not only get cable..these days we get free internet access as well. Unlimited nights and weekends. =) They feed us well too. Those walls show how much money the US govt. puts into our schools. US govt. spends more money on prisons than our education...maybe i should quit school and go to prison...Our tennis courts aren't too bad, but its built right next to the softball field so dirt and crap gets on our courts when the wind blows. And to Vince, yeah, i'm on the Cleveland tennis team. I hear a bit about you from Ike. Wow, of all the diverse people from all over the world on this forum, there's a guy couple of miles away on it. I play Varisty dubs. played some of 2 dubs last year when it was my first year on the team. Hopefully i'll play singles this year cuz i hate having to rely half the court to another person. I like covering the whole court. I think the Vince Ike hits with goes to Granada. Not sure though. Which school do you go to?

I have a homepage with some pics (http://hometown.aol.com/jbsikes/) , but, I don't think I've had too many of me taken while playing tennis. I guess I never even think about it. Amazing, I've spent more time on a tennis court than most people, and I can't seem to locate of even one of me playing.
I have quite a few of me as a fan at events (the Davis Cup in Paris, the US Open, Mercedes-Benz Cup in LA), but damn if I don't have any of me playing. I don't know how to post those pics. I'll work on it. I do have a nice mock photo of my ex-gf and I holding up the 2001 US Open mixed doubles trophy.

What I mean is, the way I move to the tennis ball, if there's a bad bounce I get hit by it right on the cheek or in the eye 'cause I'm short but trying to get the ball on the rise. Today I got hit again, but luckily I don't bruise easily.

Wow--after seeing the courts other people play on, I realize how lucky we are in Georgia to have so many great public courts. In LaGrange, GA (population 29,000) we have 6 hard and 6 public clay courts that are in great shape--better than at the country club.

Hat's off to those of you like Noelle who love the game enough to play even when the courts are in bad shape.

Forget rain delay, you guys have air pollution delay eh? We have deer and road runners around here. Skunks are in the region but haven't been spotted anywhere near the courts 'yet'....this thread is gonna end up being the most viewed thread evAr on this board, if it hasn't already. there are clay courts, but for the most part they are that crappy green har-tru stuff, that supposedly doesn't play like red clay at all, at least not as extreme. most of the clay courts are part of clubs, haven't seen any public ones. all of the public courts i have seen are hard, pretty safe to say hard courts dominate the US. which sucks, because clay makes it harder to ride skateboards and other things that screw up the courts. is the clay court you're on in that pic public or private?

deflori - Yes. *Most* clay in the US is green (Har-Tru or Rubico are the brand names I know). These clay courts are not as slow as the red clay of Europe. They are just enough firmer that one can play S/V without getting creamed. (Although, S/V on our clay is still *unusual*.)

Yeah.

Btw, I think it's quite funny with those advertisments - normally who would sponsor a small local tournament directed at pure recreational players? But I guess it helps when one of the organisers of the tournaments works as a candy salesman...

It really improves the atmosphere of the tournament - it almost feels like a big serious one with them. Actually slightly more serious than some "real" tournaments I've attended to since we have umpires (the participating players get to practice their umpire skills) at all the matches!

The only problem with the Saturday evening/night BBQ is that one is a little bit tired on Sunday morning when the doubles tournaments start at around 8am...

does technique really matter that much? i mean a friend of mine.. my coach always say that his technique for his serve is the worst ever.. he calls it the inside out serve.. but when we were at memorial drive for practice.. this guy hits 200-210kph serve consistently.. this is the pace hewitt hits... fastest server but worst technique? beat that!

Kaptain Karl
02-26-2005, 04:39 PM
Yes. Technique *does* matter. Poor mechanics -- no matter how good the short term results -- can, and frequently DO, lead to some sort of injury. If an abbreviated career is worth a few extra MPH today ... well, that's your call.

Funny thing is that I play on this court only about once a week at most because there are no good players I know of that live in this subdivision or nearby. They are all beginners or people who play a couple times a year.

Beautiful setting. Do you ever get critters on the courts Goober? Scorpians, snakes, other large arachnids or other desert critters? Almost inevitable I would think. Worth it nonetheless.

Actually no. If you look at the pic one side has about a 2 foot wall. The other side has some mesh which you can't see around the bottom of the fence. This keeps most of the snakes and larger pests out. There are occasional bugs but nothing out of the ordinary. I have never had to interupt play because of desert critters. OTOH if I could find people to play with other than my brother who are willing to drive over to my place to play that would be great :)

Most of the time I have to drive 25-35 minutes to play somebody else :/

I know the odds are stacked in my favor. :) But I managed to play at a better court this past weekend. No open cracks, freshly painted, scenic mountain view, and we had the court to ourselves. We tended to lose the balls over the cliff edge if we mishit them, though, and the court did have a slight slope to the right.

Noelle,
Was that court in the Baguio area. I spent some time up there while in the Navy. Fort Hays?? I think. I see the pine trees in the background and it made me think of that area. It is a much different climate than one would normally expect for the Phillipines!

I live in Manila, Philippines. That court, however, is in Loacan, Baguio City. Yep, it was a breezy, high altitude court. Since I usually play at sea-level, a lot of my shots tended to float high and long that day.

Those racquet head sizes look huge
That's only because we all stand just a little over 5 feet tall (the guy, my cousin, is 5'4) and the frames in front are OS frames (110sq.in. for the girl on the left, and 120sq.in. for the girl on the right). The frame I'm holding is 97sq.in. though.

Mostly indoor tennis at the nearby cities (I'm a member of three clubs, and play tennis at four indoor facilities). I also play a variant of hockey called "rinkbandy" (you use a rubber ball instead of a puck, play with special clubs and aren't allowed to tackle your opponents). And of course the occasional venture into the gym for some workout in the machines.

But mostly indoor tennis on carpet courts. The clay courts are next to our house though so I really look forward to when we open them for the season - gonna attempt to change my serve motion this summer when I can spend _hours_ on those courts without having to pay per the hour...

Some pictures of one of the indoor facilities that I use:

It'll be pretty boring - unless the snow is really *packed* it'll be a game of serve-and-serve (until you've lost all the balls in the snow field) and cold...

Wasn't there a tennis tournament in Finland somewhere where they play on ice? I suppose the players wear skates. It's gonna be impossibly quick and low bounces...

Nah, they doesn't feel close at all in real life. I find those courts perfectly playable and not as "tight" as some other courts I've played at.

Awesome court.....btw what's the bounce on carpet like???

I think it depends a little on the type of carpet - the one used on these courts is rather "shorthaired" and so it mostly depends on the surface beneath the carpet (concrete). The basic bounce is relatively normal compared to a hardcourt. However the "hairs" of the carpet makes the ball "grab" it and thus various types of spin have great effect (the longer the "hair" the more spin effect you'll get). It's fairly comfortable to play on though as long as you don't fall - you can get really nasty "burn" wounds on this surface...

peter, that surface looks pretty shiny. Is the court built in a basketball court? I think I can also see some badminton lines...

There's a whole sh*tload of lines on those courts. It's actually quite sad - they used to be real tennis courts with a good hardcourt surface but the tennis club that managed them got into financial troubles a couple of years ago and so the courts got turned over (they were owned by the city) to a non-tennis sports organization and then they resurfaced them with a surface that isn't tennis-friendly at all. (They play badminton, football, handball, floorball and other stuff on those courts nowadays - ie used as a general sports facility).

It's quite horribly to actually try to play tennis on the current surface (so we normally don't do that - we only have some tennis lessons for younger kids there - and had some practice lessions for that tennis trainer course) - the balls skids a lot and almost doesn't bounce. They also charge about 50% more for thouse courts that what it costs at the other tennis clubs in the city.

Isnt your foot aloud to be on the line? No. From the time you start your motion, until you make contact with the ball, you may not even *touch* the line. (Many servers, in launching up to strike the ball, go across the line while they are in the air. So long as they make contact with the ball before touching the ground, this is not a fault.)

Tsk. The Doc should have cropped the pic. ;) But seriously, I'm glad the Kaptain is in to correct any misconceptions about what foot-faulting is.

[And the Umpire *over rules* the hasty call from KK.]

Better, Dr. H. Definitely better. (I half expected you to have photoshopped the first pic ... with the baseline clearly arcing around your foot!) I must have had dust in my eye....

<edit> Hey!!! You DID photoshop that pic. Instead of fixing your serve, you "fixed" the court. What a RAT!!! </edit>
