I'm not sure if this is supposed to be top songs "of all time" or "currently," and it's no easy feat compiling either sort of list, but here's what comes to mind. In no particular order:

1. Sheer Terror - Not waving, drowning
2. The Smiths - There is a light that never goes out
3 The Templars - Stick to your guns
4. Cocksparrer - Out on an island
5. The Jam - I've changed my address
6. Judge - Like you
7. Sol Invictus - Oh what fun
8. The Who - Naked eye
9. Agalloch - A Celebration for the death of mankind
10. The Ordinary Boys - On an island

Totally inaccurate list. I might be able to do better if it was limited to a particular genre or subgenre.

Pretty much all Beatles

Hey Jude - The Beatles
Across The Universe - The Beatles
Imagine - John Lennon
Yesterday - The Beatles
Let It Be - The Beatles
#9 Dream - John Lennon
Here, There and Everywhere - The Beatles
Here Comes The Sun - The Beatles
I Will - The Beatles
Twist and Shout - The Beatles
...and about 40 others

If we're not counting those four dudes, then I might broaden my horizons and consider Layla (Eric Clapton - the electric guitar never sounded better), Simon and Garfunkel (just in general, since all their songs are exactly the same), Mr. Tambourine Man (The Byrds cover)...and some other ***** that's not as good as the Beatles.

There was a brief one week period when I was into Oasis...then I realized that they suck. They have the same formula for every song - pretty much the same chords and the same vocals and the same rhythm and build-up. It's a good formula, but it's been so overdone that it's just utter cheesy crap now. And a lot of those songs run way too long, in a lame attempt to be epic. They're pretty much the opposite of the Liverpool band that they've tried so hard to copy.

Slightly different here lol. I try to look back but leave it there. It seems like a lot of the choices here are mainstream pop. Lately I have been listening to music by Icelanders. They are to me true music artist out there(Bjork, MuM, Sigur Ros I even like Apparat Organ Quartet lol).

Be Here Now-Heathen Chemistry weren't that great but their other three albums + Masterplan along with their other B sides make them a great band. Their new album next year will be amazing if Don't Believe the Truth was any gauge to where they are going, they see themselves as the best band out there and won't release another ***** album by their standards.

That's too funny! Was there ever any doubt that I'm a girl with my soft, gentle feminine posts and all? Hehe. I thought the fact that I like alternative makes me more on the masculine side but apparently not so much. I am not a huge fan of the Bryan Adams love songs although there are a few that are nice.

Side note: When my sister got married her wedding song was Alive by Edwin while all around them couples were ringing in their nuptials to the teeth aching sound of Bryan Adams and Celine Dion. But then again, the groom's party stripped off their tuxedos at the reception to reveal I Am Canadian t-shirts so it wasn't the usual boring ceremony. ;)

Oh it got restarted when I restocked all of my songs, it would definitely not be that list if it was original. I don't listen to music 24/7 anyway, and as you may know if you change songs it doesn't count (you have to finish the whole song) and I do that A LOT.

Not a top 10 list but The Verve's new album, Forth, is incredible. I definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys their style. In my opinion it's above Urban Hymns in terms of quality.

Favourites off of it for me are Noise Epic, Appalachian Springs, Valium Skies, and Sit and Wonder.

Yeah, I love music, but sorry I have nothing to add to this thread other than the fact that I can't stop laughing about vascoboy's list.

It went over my head the first time, then when someone caught him for duplicating Shi-Tanic Celine Dion vehicles, I got a chance to re-read/absorb it and realize what brilliant satire that list really is.

I mean, can you get cheesier and more maudlin, soundtracky, poppy, things that are wrong with the music bidness for $300 please Alex?

Wow, some of you guys really have questionable songs. Most of you will not enjoy your groups in about 10-20 years because much of the music you listen to will is not great, long standing music.

Beatles, Stones, The Who, Zeppelin, Doors, Hendrix, Bowie, Skynrd, Petty, REM, Floyd, Eagles, Aerosmith and others--this is real music that stands the test of time. Some of you need to understand what true creative musical genius is. As I said, you won't be listening to much of this crap you list when you get in your 40's and beyond. I'm 45 and like the Beatles now as much as I did in my early 20's. Their music stands the test of time, not Metallica, Judas Priest, or Attica Blues.

you probaly dont even know who Attica Blues is and you question my choices... for your information i possess more than 800 records... ranging from John Coltrane and Lonnie Liston Smith to Rechezentrum or Kraftwerk to Mettalica or Rage Against the Machine...

MY preferences happen go to Electronic music since early 90's with focus on Independent Electronic and sub-genres such as Trip-Hop, Electro-Lounge, New- groove Kitsch, Nu-jazz and others

if you took time to think (humans do it) you could have done a search and see that most of those records in my list (including Attica Blues) happen to come from the early to late nineties, being some of them now 10 + years old.. so you can see they stood to the test of time.

as for your dear beatles, i do happen to have their full studio discography!
Stones mean nothing to me...
the who, i listen them everytime i take a stroll in my vespa...
Petty??? bar brawl trailler trash music?
Aerosmith...? nuff said...

your generalizations could be tore appart with a few examples but ill just stick to this one:
Dancing IN the Streets by Mick Jagger and David Bowie... really stood to times... (www.youtube.com/watch?v=7y-x2fWKbmo)

so i dont put up with your "im 45 and i have been to woodstock, hence i rock" bs. respect others choices like they thaugt you in the "soo liberal 70's" ways.

ps: a curious thing is that you only refer to mainstream bs form those days, as you dont mention great inspirational bands and artists suchs as Velvet Underground, Television, Stooges, Alan Vega's Suicide, Nick Drake, Tim Buckley... need more?

Where's song #10 in that "Top Ten" list you may ask? Beats me....the bottom Line is: at last count, I think I had about 32 "Top Ten" lists floating around in my frog brain.....that is, those "particular" songs that come to mind on a "particular" day. Where, for example, to fit J.S. Bach's Brandenberg Concertos?...Joe William's "60 Minute Man?"..... The Sex Pistol's "God Save the Queen?"..... Ella Fitzgerald's "Bewitched, Bothered & Bewildered?" (can a woman possibly sing any better?) ..... The Rolling Stones' "Monkey Man?" .... Radiohead's "Reckoner?" ..... Eric Burdon's "Spill the Wine?".....Alan O'Day's "Undercover Angel" (huh?--LOL) ...... or Zepplin's "Houses of the Holy"...... you get the drift ...

I'm surprised you didn't have "Over The Rainbow" on your list. ;-)

Seriously OvertheFence, I see you like "Finlandia" Sibelius. Speaking of "northern lights" (Scand.) do you like Edvard Greig? ("Morning" ... "Solveig's Song")
