At the moment, even when landing deep in the box, my kick serve just kicks, without much forward movement. Is it just a case of hitting the ball harder?

i think ur trying 2 put 2 much kick if theres no foreward motion. try hitting it just slighty flatter although stil trying to kick the ball just not as much and see how u ho:)

You are probably putting too much spin as the poster above stated. Go through the ball more so it moves forward rather than just jumping up.

When tossing the ball, try to put the ball a little bit infront of you.

when you say "without much forward movement" what exactly do you mean? When you say it "just kicks" does it travel high to a righty's backhand. In my experience, the best kick serves are not measured by how hard they are hit, but how wide and high the ball bounces.

I used to have that problem as well. Then I added more pace to it and it kicked with more depth and even more leverage. So, i would try to add more pace and see what happens.

Bingo
You may also want to try hitting a little harder.

basically, it bounces maybe 5ft in the air, but would bounce around or just after the baseline.

-throw ball out but still behind your head.
-use a lot of legs to jump into the serve
-swing through by brushing up on the ball
-followthrough (maybe you can pronate if possible)

does it kick over to ther back handside or just sit up? as long as it doesn't just sit up it shouldn't be a problem. A kick serve really doesn't need to be that hard. As long as it kicks up high to the backhand, no one's going to hit winners or put you in a defensive position with it.

If your serve doesn't go forward, but it goes straight up after the bounce, you're hitting the ball with backspin. Ask an observer to check the spin on your serve.

Huh...what WOULD you call a serve with extreme backspin? The slider? the Sitter?...

Um no...it's not a kick! It's got backspin...so its the opposite of a kick...what's opposite of kick? Wait a sec...let me consult a thesaurus...
