Renovating a Smooth Leather grip?

I recently bought a used Prostaff 6.0 - 95" that I really enjoy.

The leather grip is really smooth due to the years of use and tends to be a bit slippery (and tacky at the wrong times). I've tried it with overgrip but found that I prefer the weight and size without. (Would buy another one if it were readily available.)

I will buy a new leather grip if necessary BUT is this a possibility?

Has anyone tried to 'roughen' up or give texture to an older leather grip before? Sandpaper? Any adverse effects?

I wouldn't use sand paper or anything else to rough it up. That would actually soften it like suede.

Have you tried cleaning and restoring it? There's a company called Lexol.com that makes stuff to clean and treat leather. Neatsfoot is what gives a grip it's tacky feel. Just rub on a few drops and let it dry. I don't bother wiping off excess like the instructions say. It doesn't take much and you don't have to do it too often. The smallest size bottle of neatsfoot should last for years.

I tried saddlesoap once and it worked to re-treat the leather.
