Checking for new messages

Has anyone figured out how to get the same functionality on this new board regarding subscribing to threads and seeing only new messages quickly and easily like we used to be able to do?

I click on the "Watch this topic for replies" option but it doesn't seem to do anything...

There is no way to set it so that the most recent threads are at the top anymore. This is a feature lost in the 'improvement'.

Now, the thread with the most recent post automatically and always goes to the top - as if they are telling us what is interesting to someone who just posted MUST be just as interesting to us. If someone writes "Hi" in a 3 week old thread, it will jump to the top - and there is no way to set it otherwise.

This way, locating new threads is virtually impossible. The newest thread could be 12 threads down on the list. Ridiculous.
