My smash at high ball close to the net is particularly weak and ineffective which makes the ball retrievable by opponents.

I can't figure out the comfortable and powerful grip to use for that purpose and what else goes wrong there. Tips and advices?

I use the same grip that I use for serving, which is a continental grip.
I don't have trouble putting away overheads, maybe your hitting the ball to soft or not placing it AWAY from your op.

An overhead smash would be a continental, but a high forehand smash would be a western or a deep semi western.

Continental Grip, turn sideways, move back at least one or two steps from where your intended hitting zone, don't position yourself directly where the ball is dropping, it is easier to move in than back up. Very important, do not pull your head down too early watch the ball and simply pop without slicing or spinning, lastly aim comfortably at an open spot, most like outside the service box for a safety margin at the net, do not overhit. Hope this helps.
