Yeah, he'll stay out there until I'm done practicing. The slobber thing is annoying, especially when you start serving with those balls and the slobber gets sprayed all over the place. :-?

What? Don't let a short court keep you from this elite community. Go to an indoor court and hit the bubble which counts as a fence. I know indoor courts are tough to find in California, but look around.

Nice club. I definitely can (wouldn't know except I hit the bubble indoors, my fences are close). About hitting side fences, try to hit the corner so that you hit the side fence, then the back fence, and stick it in the back fence. I've done it, that's a task though. Also, we had a competition to see how many courts over you could serve (and get it in) and one kid hit it in from like 4 or 5 courts down, it was crazy.

Well this would be more elite. With fresh balls you can one bounce a serve into the back fence hitting well under 90mph and probably under 70mph if it is hit with topspin. I think I'm going to play with my radar gun this weekend and see how slowly I can hit a serve and still get it to one bounce into the back fence.

yes, sign me up. Both wide kick serves and flat dtl serves hit the fence. Don't know about slices.

I would like to be part of this club... but not today.
Sometimes, I serve huge ACES that people watching all admire, and it confuses me into thinking I am actually decent at tennis! ...I have a corner in the wall of our indoor club that I have blasted all the plaster off of....
I can be100% on fire somedays... and 100% totally off on other days, and not being able to correct the problem mid-match is so frustrating.

Then there was today.... I actually barely got a racquet on the ball and it hit my bumperguard on the serve and flew OVER the fence on the FLY! Totally uncoordinated, and just had no good serves. My 2nd serve was actually pretty good, but the more I TRIED to put heat on my serve, the worse it got. No matter if 2 days ago I was blasting heaters, if anybody saw me today they would INSTANTLY remove me from the good serving club.

When my serve is on, it is effortless, so I guess something was out of whack, and by trying to force it, I just looked like a clown out there.

Frustrating sport..... I was so pizzed out there. At least the sun was out for a while.

p.s. - Doubles is a DUMB DUMB game... nothing is more frustrating than finally hitting a great serve that the receiver can just barely float over the net and watch your lazy net-man slap into the net. AAAAAARGH!!!!

You want an elite club?

Want to know if you have any real steam on your serve?

Assume your normal service position, and spike the ball into the ground on your side of the net, before your own service box, and get it to hit the back fence on the fly.

That is heat.

I was just going to mention my wall crushing serves with the giant 10ft high spring my serves were taking off the clay courts I played on last weekend! (But maybe they were hitting the nails that tack down the service line????)
I don't play on clay much, so I wasn't expecting to be able to get this much juice on serves!
Either way, they were some sweet serves!

i am not kidding. I can hit the back fence in the way you described. I just cant aim it. I just rip the shot and up it goes...it sometimes hits the backfence and it sometimes goes above it and sometimes it hits the fence on the same side where i hit it.There were times when it never went anywhere..it skoots up high in the air and comes down.

I have to wait until warm weather arrives before i can post a video of it neverthless, i find this more comfortable than hitting the back fence with a legal serve.

Isn't it easier to hit high up with a kick serve than a flat - at least that's my experience.

Anyway, I am thinking that the club can be of (more) use to the community if it helps more people join the club, rather than reject them.

Also, how to get a higher percentage of serves to hit the fence.

The forehand that I hit was a sitter that hung around the service line. It was in high school dubs. We were all wondering where the ball went.....

As for hitting it through the fence, I'm sure it would depend how open or closed the links in the fence would be. Bare galvanized metal, or the vinyl coated kind. I'm not sure if it's standardized or anything.

Or if you play indoors and have the thick vinyl back curtains, you'd have to go with being able to made that loud booming thump off the one bounce in the service box. The kind that scares the crap out of someone walking right behind it.....

A truly elite club would be the "Backhand Smash Over The Fence" Club. Now THAT would be impressive. I was hitting the ball so cleanly today I wonder if some of my forehands would've gone through a fence, or at the very least get caught in it (I've done the latter before actually, but rarely). I'm re-familiarizing myself by reading the wikipedia description and it's sending chills down my spine. It's simply so well-written, well thought out, and the detail is absolutely amazing. That all said, I shouldn't be overanalyzing this series because I enjoyed it most for what it was, an engrossing tale with a beautiful, bittersweet ending that made its everlasting--dare I say even "historic"--mark in literature, anime or not.

The chain-link fencing around the courts at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, CA, has openings just a bit smaller than a tennis ball. If the ball hits the fence just right, it goes right through.

A strange observation:
I was serving from the ad court only. My wide serves (flat) were hitting the back fence high up. but my dtl's were hitting lower (only a foot above).
Anyone else have that ?

Definitely the opposite for me. I was playing my buddy who overcommitted to the ad side when I served up the T. The ball clanged the fence hard and my opponent yelled, "nice serve". He stopped playing the ad court too deep in the corner after that.

Do you get extra points or a higher status if you can hit it hard enough to go through the back fence or get "stuck" enough that your opponents needs a moment to get it out?

I can't say I blame you, but I did say legal serve. The closest I've come to that was when some clown played my serve too close to the serve line so I wanted to teach him a lesson. I wound up nailing him in the chest because my serves don't bounce that low. Your opponent would have to have some long legs anyway so the odds are against you nailing him in the jewels with a serve that lands inside the box.

My serve was in the box, and she was about 3 feet behind the baseline. My 5.5 buddy was playing with her, and I was playing with another 3.5 guy. So I would blast one down the T to my buddy who was playing deuce court, win the point, then try to serve slow to her, and double fault. So I double faulted trying to serve slowly to her twice and won two points against my buddy. Then my buddy got back one of my serves and won the point putting me at ad out, so I said, F' it, I am just gonna put in a routine 2nd serve, and get us back to deuce, and I tagged her.

Felt like such a jackass.

For the rest of my service games I just aced her, no more body serves, no more double faults.

Almost forgot, I hit a serve through a guys legs once. He was on the low side of 3.0, and I was being nice and hitting with him, since he asked me to hit while I was practicing my serve (Lots of people do this, one would figure that they would get the idea of how we would match up just watching me serve. I suppose my serve looks slow or something). So we hit around for like 15 mins, (Translation, I ran down everything, and hit it back to him softly.) Then he asked me to play a set. I asked him if he was sure he wanted to stand there. He nodded in the affirmative, and I five-holed him on my first serve of the set.

Then I had a look at Fed's serve, and read some posts here, and it vastly improved my serve - in about one day only.

I have hit a lot of new players in the face with my second serve, the thing is that they think it is going to be a short one and then just jump right at them, i also have this double fault issue when trying to take some speed of my serve ... btw i usually hit the back fence/wall.

I really have difficulty serving below 70 or so, which makes it tough for me to hit with some peeps. Anywhere from 50%-100% effort, I have about the same consistency, so I double fault the same amount no matter how hard I serve as long as it is at least 50% effort.

Which now in the winter time, is a lot.

Which once I can get outdoors and get some pratice in will come down into the range of acceptable.

Rickson, Is hitting the fence really an elite thing. Honestly asking.

Today i was doing some easy serves while my pardner was chatting away on the phone. Each one hit the fence.
And tbh I would not rate myself above a 3.0.

Or do you have to hit the fence when serving against a partner. I suspect mine would still be so since the serves in question were either dtl or wide.

Cheers all.

As I already told Duzza, this community is just for ***** and giggles. Hitting the fence isn't a huge deal at all, but it's the best way to ace an opponent. The 2 bounce ace just isn't a good looking ace. I once saw Federer do it to Grosjean at Wimbledon and because it was a 2 bouncer, you just get the feeling that Grosjean should have gotten to the ball. BTW, if I'm up big on my opponent, I'll sometimes let him ace me so I could show him that he 2 bounces. I give him a dishonest, "nice serve" with a little snicker.

Awesome. Back in highschool, I was serving against one of the JV kids... Hit a big flat serve (probably about 100-110 back then)... He didn't try to hit it, he just sort of jumped backwards, and it caught him in a nasty spot. It was quite amusing.

Hitting through the fence is very satisfying at first, but an absolute pain in the *** when you have woods behind the fence, or a hill, or it's wet outside the court! Uhg.

You may only join if you can hit the fence on your serve without the serve going long and without an extra bounce. Fences that are less than 20 feet from the baseline do not count.

I herebye ban you until you submit a New Video!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I will be in florida this weekend, and I am hoping to sneak down to the courts and get some footage of my abbreviated motion. I highly doubt that there will be anyone that I will be able to get any good hitting in against, but who knows, maybe some DI kid will be visiting his grandparents too lol.

P.S. I appeal your ban on the grounds that I didn't make it cold and snowy in new york. It is this winter thing and it happens every damn year. I am more than willing to take and share video, so that everyone can rate me 3.5, but only above 60 degrees. If you wan't to pitch in then you can either talk it over with the man upstairs, and get me some nice weather here, or you can come work in my stead so that I can go somewhere warm.

OK, guys, I was just reading this (http://www.eaglefustar.com/blog.html) and I have a question.
As a matter of fact, Roger (Fed) is very conscious of Michael's needs and is truly fantastic in that regard. Michael served at him for about 10 minutes straight and Roger insisted that we change the drill up because he didn't want Michael to hurt himself by serving too many balls in a row. He is very aware of the other guy's needs and is truly a gentelman about that. He wants Michael to have productive practices and every practice so far has been nothing short of one.Is this as per general understanding ... more than 10 mins of continuous serving can injure.

What other drills can one do in between if one is alone and wishes to spend an hour or more serving ? Thx.

Confession:
When I started playing, and I did NOT know how to hit a forehand or backhand (honest), I picked up the rack in a sort of eastern grip, threw the ball in front of me, and lunged after it smacking it hard.
I was facing the net. too.

The serve was really fast and unpickable, and for a while the only thing I could do was serve.

One month later, I learned how to hold a racquet properly (SW) and then the backhand, and then began working on my serve, the proper way -- studying various videos and finally the FYB site when it started.

After much practice, I was able to hit the fence, however, since last night I have been wondering whether my initial pancake? / flyswat ? serves were faster than my current ones.

My current serve is well placed, and I ace more due to hitting corners. I don't think anyone has found it too fast.
But my initial serve used to stun the opp, even when served in the middle of the box.

Has anyone faced the same problem.

Should I run a comparison of both serves again, and see if the old one really is faster ?

BTW, when i copy the Fed/Sampras serve without a ball, I do it great, but with a ball is another story :-(
Feedback and solace appreciated.

J011yroger

^^^ The fact that your old incorrect serve may have been faster is irrelivant.

It is wrong, and it will end up hurting you, and no matter that it was faster than you currently serve using the correct motion, I can assure you that it was not fast at all in the grand scheme of things.

Picture it this way. You ask me for directions on how to get to a store that is several miles away.

I give you directions to the store, telling you that you were totally lost going the way you were originally headed.

15 minutes later you call me from your car, and say that you are following my directions to the store, but you think that there was less traffic on the road that you were taking when you were lost.

What would my reply be?

"Who cares how much traffic was on the other road? You were going the wrong F'ing way, and wouldn't get to the store on that road!!!"

So in short, rest assured that though you are struggling with the correct serve, that with practice you will eclipse your old serve by leaps and bounds.

Actually, by no means am i considering going back to that serve. It gives me some confidence that at least my body has the ability to serve at a better speed.
Second, it makes me realize that I am still doing something wrong currently, like perhaps not turning enough -- I could be serving a bit sideways. I use the Sampras platform stance.

I should be in this community as I can regularly hit flat or kick serves that reach the back fence.

I would point out two things:

1) A good slice serve should hit the side fence before the back fence. (A good kick serve hit wide as well).

2) A good exercise to increase serve speed and loosen up the wrist is to try to hit a long flat/drive serve that hits the back fence (without bouncing). I like to do this after warming up, then when you hit serves in the service box it's *easy* to get power.

Today, yet again I was experimenting with my serve. It just wasn't quite cutting the mustard.

The platform stance just leaves me awkward on follow-through. I am perfect when serving without a ball, but with the ball ... :-(

So after giving up on Sampras's style after one month, and now even Fed's style, today I tried Tsonga's style.

I was surprised to see I was getting much better consistency and speed, and even spin on the balls.
Anyone have comments on the Tsonga style ... would like to hear experiences or feedback.

I realize that this is quite subjective, but could we make a list of big servers (current).
I guess the criteria would be:

1. aces quite a bit in matches
(you guys may set some figure if you want)
2. can rely on serve to get himself out of tough situations

3. perhaps unreturnable serves should also be taken into account

Or maybe average speed of serve should also be taken into account.

To start with:

Federer
Roddick
Sampras (could not resist)
Feliciano Lopez ?
Tsonga ?
Djoko
Isner
Karlovic
Guccione

Correct me if I've erred on anyone. The list does not have to be too accurate or perfect. I would try to see matches of the listed people, study their serves -- that's all. thanks.

Sounds like you need to practice your aim. Try using cones in the service court to get it in. ;)

Way cool .... Thanks.

I was trying to hit the back fence with an OH smash, didn't think to try hitting the fence with the serve. Lots of good ideas here!

What happened to the Organization?

Looks like my "Fischer Faction" group is doing better than the Organization!

[QUOTE=Sentinel;2174619]I realize that this is quite subjective, but could we make a list of big servers (current).

Any women come to mind? I realize that women are less powerful than men, but it seems that some women might meet those criteria within the women's field.

Venus and Serena come to mind. Oh wait, you said women, nevermind.

You know what's funny about watching women pros is that even when they hit the wall (excluding long serves), the ball doesn't go very high on the wall.

Well, that wall DOES look a little farther back than your typical public court fence, but you're right, even Kuznetsova's kickers don't hit that high up.

Not just for women either, quite a few of Nadal's serves hit the wall VERY close to the bottom, kind of like mine. Then again he hits mostly slice serves, so I guess the ball stays really low.

You can be a part of the community as long as you don't go after anyone's mom.

I'm not sure of the rules of this club, having read neither the OP or any of the posts in this thread, but am I eligible for membership based on the numerous occasions I've hit the fence with my thrown racket?

You mean across the entire court from your own baseline? I'd say that would be more than acceptable.

Any room for the Lord of Isengard?

Can you swing a mighty hammer fast enough to make a ball hit the fence in one bounce?

Yes, but the racket should have bounced off your opponents head :-D

This really SUCKS big time. Every time I see a match I study the pros serves and start modifying my own. So I've been watching Sampras vs Federer (and old match) and tried out something new. Seems to have improved my serve speed. .... Wonder when i will stop playing with my serve !!!

Does anyone else feel depressed when they watch Sampras and Federer manhandle Agassi's 120mph first serve like it's nothing?

Agassi has manhandled serves a LOT faster than 120 in his day.

Sickest return of all time IMO.

Why would what one pro does against another pro on the tennis court make you feel depressed in any way?
