By "finesse" shots I mean those kind of shots that seem to be all control and little power, like those "thread the needle" down the line shots or those tricky cross-court shots. Also, when volleying, how to simply place the ball wherever you want, as opposed to smashing it or blocking it away. How does one go about to getting that extra "touch" in the game?

Try to develop some feel during practice or off the court . . . by "catching" the ball with your racquet or as one example during service warm up slicing the incoming serve softly so that it bounces a few feet in front of you and then comes back to you . . . in essence learn to do some tricks with your racquet and the ball -- this will very quickly give you the feel required for drop volleys etc.

I just try to sort of "loosen up", if you know what I mean. Instead of punching the volley I just hold my racquet out and let the ball hit the strings, with the racquet only controlling the angle.
