View Full Version : Is there a way that I make close string pattern feel similar to open string pattern?

I'm currently using K Factor Surge which is loaded up with 40 grams of weight. I'm using Cyber Flash 1.25 in 60 lbs. and I'm planning to switch to another racket because I like the feel of narrow beam width. However, some of the rackets that have the specs I want have close string pattern which feels a lot different from open string pattern. So, my question is what tension should I use on 18X20 stringbed if I were switching from 16X20 open string pattern?

Something I forgot to mention: the head size of K Factor Surge is 100 and the rackets that I'm planning to demo have head sizes of 98, 97, 95, 93.

Use as thin a gauge as possible (Pro Supex BA 1.15 comes to mind or anything 1.20 or less) and string it low. For reference, I string my PK Redondo 98 at around 51/49 lbs with a Pro Supex BA 1.22/Titan Syn Gut 1.25 hybrid. That was coming a Babolat Pure Drive+, strung with Gosen JC 16 at 62. I don't think you need to go that low (and my playing style changed over time, so it prompted a shift that drastic), but I would suggest around 53-55 lbs on an 18x20 depending on which frame if you've been stringing anywhere in the 60's with an open pattern. But regardless, open pattern users who go to an tight pattern will always feel that the string bed feels too "boardy" while tight pattern users who opt for an open pattern will think the string bed is too "hollow". It's really a subjective matter.
