I just think it's funny that a Canadian, with French and English on every package in every store misses the spelling/conjugation of 'Allez'.

That's just funny, eh.

"Pame'' or ''Ela'' in Greek.

This made me giggle, I have to say.

Well, I live on Curacao, I'm Venezuelan, go to a Dutch school (Curacao's in the Netherland Antilles, so yeah, that's how it works), speak fluent English (without accent) and get French at school.

Papiamentu: Ban! (I guess it would be pronounced "bahn")
Dutch: Not really sure what this would be, 'cause saying "Kom!" or "Ga!" just doesn't sound right. I guess just "Ja!" which is "yeah".
Spanish: Pretty obvious, I guess. "Vamos", "Si", though "Dale" is what I usually yell.
French: "Allez"

thats fine and all, but if neiminen was to play hewitt how would one say "Come on" TM in finnish?Actually hollywood, it's not fine and all. :-) "Voi vittu" is a no-no; it's pretty much the "F" bomb; voi vittu meaning "bleep this!" or "oh bleep!" while "perkele" is somewhat milder ("damn" or the 's' word). I'll address the "come on!" variations below.

[b]I believe the correct word is "Rankkari" but I could be wrong. Dedans?Nice try wiseguy! :-) Rankkari (as you know undoubtably know-lol) translates pretty much to "wanker."

There isn't really (my very limited "Suomi" i.e. Finnish aside) a standard "come on!" phrase. Some variations to consider:

tule! tule! = come! come!
mene! mene! = go! go!
jatka! = continue!

hyva! hyva! = good! good! (better used in bed with a kaunis suomalainen kuningatar = beautiful Finnish queen)

voit voittaa! = you can win!

words that denote progress:

edistya = get better
edeta = to progress

combining them from the above selections, you could come up with:

"Tule, tule! Voit edistya!" (or "Go, go! You can get better!")

(pronounciation guide: the "y" in Finnish is semi-silent; it's pronounced like the "y" in the word "physics")

Doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, so I save the Finnish for when I want to let off a little steam: voi vittu! (smirk)

Nakemiin! :-)

That's funny, I recall an interview with Wilander in the 80's; when asked about the "Vicht" salute, he mentioned it was a gesture peculiar to his hometown and it meant "everything's OK" - how Hewitt co-opted it is beyond me, and obviously it's now gone well past its original meaning...

I also like how the Italians (forza!) yell out "Die" to spur on their favorites: "Die, John!" (McEnroe once thought he was being threatened by otherwise friendly fans in Rome!)

I believe most demonstrative Germans would say, "Geh doch!" [(emphatic) Go!] to psyche up. At least I do.

Ha, ha. Ok hollywood, this is on the level. Disregard my fisrt/original post wherein I referenced "perkele" to mean "good shot" and "voi vittu" to mean "great shot." Those Finnish words (perkele/voi vittu) in fact mean "sh*t" and "oh f**k" respectfully.
I was just imagining Jarko playing a match down in Miami and a well-meaning fan (Drakulie) using those words to shout out "enouragement" to Jarko, that is, unknowingly showering the court with Finnish profanities-lol-that would've resonnated in only "one" pair of ears: Jarko's-lol~! My most recent/previous post above this can however be taken at face value. I did honestly try to attempt to list words and phrases of encouragement along the lines of "come on!":

"tule, tule...voit edistya!" ("come on..you can progress!")

Regards.

In Dutch it is:

"Kom op"

Much like in English.

Personally I never say something like that to myself in a tennisgame.
First I start be giving myself technical instructions like "Watch the ball", "Move yout feet", "Bend your knees".
Only when everything goes horribly wrong I swear at myself for being an idiot who should never have taken up a racquet.

You must be of a different generation or a different part of the country.
I presume both.

I hear "Kom op" a lot in doubles when people want to encourage their partner, You just don't tell yourself "Kom op".

Only people living in Holland claim that every Dutchman is a "Hollander", much to the annoyance of people living in one of the ten provinces of the Netherlands which are not "Holland". Off the 12 provinces which constitute the Netherlands only two provinces are in "Holland".

The sheer arrogance of Hollanders (people living in Holland) to declare every Dutchman as being a "Hollander" is ridiculous. It is the same as declaring every US citizen a Virginian.

A proud inhabitant of "Noord Brabant", a Dutch province just as big as Holland and home of the true soccer champions of the Netherlands, PSV Eindhoven.

Well, I'm not a Hollander (though I'll be living there next year) and I'm not really a soccer (or as it really should be called; voetbal) fan. I always loved Kluivert, though, and I hate Ajax fans. Just my opinion, though, lol. Ajax fans seem to be a bit arrogant sometimes.

I don't think that people (e.g. in the present tennis tourney in Miami) would freak and want to beat anyone--practically all of them wouldn't know what 'perkele' meant; besides Finns are somewhat lax with regard to using "blue" slang in their everyday language.

That said, it's my understanding that "perkele" is a stronger version of "devil!" in that "Perkele" originally was the name for the Finnish pagan god of thunder. And "vittu" (voy vittu) is a stronger term; i.e. "f" in nature.
