View Full Version : The Overhead Smash Organization!

Djokovicfan4life
03-23-2008, 07:54 AM
This group is for those of us who make our opponents cower in fear when we get that perfect smash. Members must be able to hit the fence and should be able to send their shots over it as well.

If you're brave enough to hang with our overpowering overheads, post here.

Videos are encouraged, although I don't have a camera.

P.S. In honor of Rickson this will be considered an "elite" group.

I will be the notable absentee from this elite group. My overhead has too much slice in it. I just can't flatten it out.

Perhaps as my serve improves, so will my overhead. Suggest you reserve #100 for me !

Lets see if this flies:

As i have mentioned before in another thread (started by Rickson, i believe)...my serve is a force to be reckoned with. Likewise, my overheads are feared throughout the lands. Here is MY problem: Everytime i attempt an overheard smash, i have yet to come close to hitting the fence. The fence actually RUNS AWAY..yes..it cowers at the sight of my incoming smash...

Depends on the day. On a good day, my opponenets don't dare to lob me cause they know they'll get one somewhere on the body (hit two people on overheads..., they weren't pleased). On a bad day, every overhead goes into the net.... Need to work on consistency.

My overhead smash (hey, is there another kind of smash, like an underhead smash) ... so my smash usually used to go into the net.
So I began aiming for the baseline and then I would get it across. But still the angle is a low one, so it does not bounce high.
Usually a smash is hit into the ground (high angle) so it bounces above opp's head.
That's what I wasn't getting, but I will work on that. Any tips appreciated.

Ha, I was playing mixed doubles yesterday (my partner hadn't played for two months and we were losing badly) and I got a sitter at the net and smacked that sucker as hard as I possibly could. The ball exploded off of my strings and whizzed a couple inches away from the guy at net.

I apologized of course, but I was really thinking, "How do you like me now, *****!"

P.S. I also served up 5 aces in one of my service games, all of them hit the fence, of course. In the end we lost 6-9, but I played pretty well.

Why would I hit it over the fence? Any teaching pro or coach worth his salt tells you to hit overheads through the court similar to a service motion for maximum pace. Only kids aim to hit it over the fence.

Why make such hard-line remarks when they aren't always true?

That's true because I'd rather hit an overhead that goes over the fence than a line drive that my opponent has a chance to return.

Yeah, you just have to make sure it actually goes over the fence so your opponent doesn't get a chance to pull a Federer on you.

That's true because I'd rather hit an overhead that goes over the fence than a line drive that my opponent has a chance to return.

Exactly. It's one thing to say 'it's not always appropriate to put the ball out of play/over the fence', but it's incredibly dumb to assert that any teaching pro would rather you not hit this shot. If you have the appropriate situation and 'ability' to hit a ball that will be untouchable, it just seems like it would be stupid not to, unless you have a great angle and don't want to bother with balls flying out of the court. It goes without saying that there are obviously situations where it will be harder to hit this shot, making it a bit riskier and a poorer choice.

Our opponent in a recent match didn't have the tools :p He went for the big smash, ended up giving my dad a nice baseline overhead to put away. Was very amusing.

Don't know what you mean by this exactly, but I was watching OSU tennis a couple weeks ago and one of the players seemed to smack her racquet on the ground when she couldn't get to a shot, like some sort of signal or something!

Can't say I really know about Berdych though.

I got a good smash off a high bounce yesterday against the cheat, Raul. I beat him 6-1 and in the 2nd set, he managed to lead 2-0 before I made it 2 all and then the infamous cheating came into play. I hit a well placed slice backhand that hit the inside of the line on the ad sideline, but Raul being in the deuce court called the ball out because of his poor angle. I told him I wasn't giving him my point, but that I'd allow him a let. The sore loser decided not to play anymore because I wouldn't give him "his point". Imagine that: a ball that hits the inside of the line and Raul calls "out" yet again.

Hey, is the Overhead Smash Organization still accepting new members? I guess it's quite obvious that I am requesting membership. However, I don't normally "hit the fence" with my smash, preferring to aim it at the open space (unless by "hit the fence", you mean that the shot's momentum is strong enough for it to eventually strike the back fence, which would be true for about any shot (except drop shots)).

Sure, it doesn't quite do Pete justice, but I get decent power and I can jump pretty high! I hit one in a match the other day, but it was on my backhand side so I couldn't hit the fence. Still sailed out of reach though. I hit two others but they weren't on serves so it wasn't quite the same.

It's good to have another weapon available, I need one badly and my regular forehand volley is pretty girly.

Keep working on those overheads. Practice makes perfect.

Make sure you are still using a proper unit turn on your overheads. Don't make the mistake that most people make and stand flat footed, facing the net. The motion should be similar to your service motion, although obviously it will be harder because your not hitting off of your own ball toss.

I haven't seen your serve though so maybe take this advice with a grain of salt.
