Hey guys,

Today I had a good 2 hour hit with this stick...I have been looking for a lighter racket for a long time now. To be specific a racket that does not feel hollow or underpowered because of the lack of mass. My fischers are great but I cant hit the ball deep in matches and feel like im working too hard for the results I get. Im really impressed with the NPro...I think it plays much better than the AeroPro Drive, Pure Drive, O3 White and all the others rackets in that spec range.

Groundstrokes:

I found it lower powered than both the aeropro drive and PD. Control is good, spin is excellent and depth is very easy to control. With the aeropro drive I can hit more spin but never feel fully in control of the ball. From the baseline the NPro is perfect...slices stayed low and very deep. I played a set and felt like I could keep the ball very deep putting more pressure on my opponent.

Volleys:

This is where I normally HATE rackets like this. However I am pleased with how the NPro responds at net. Decent feel and very easy to punch balls away. The racket is very quick around net and pick ups from the feet are easy. I think with some lead in the hoop it would make a great doubles racket. Stablity is good...mostly from the high stiffness rating.

Serves:

Serves big. Not a PD but spin and pace are easy. "Effortless" is the word I would use to describe serving with this stick. Placement is good and excellent spin. I get more 1st serves in with this racket.

Returns:

Very quick on the return. I enjoyed taking a bigger swing at the ball and blocking back big serves. Not like my fischer but gets the job done. I made a high % of returns with this racket..its very quick to get around.

Comfort:

More comfort than the babolats. Off centre hits are fine. Small sweetspot for the headsize. Feels like it has some foam in the frame which reduces vibration.

Overall:

I really like this racket and can see a switch ;-). Im not getting the spin or headspeed I want/need from my fischers.

I have just ordered 2...

I know its late as this racket is discontinued but if you are looking for a lighter, solid players racket with big spin potential then you should take this out for a test!

Cheers

Nick, are these the black and green colour scheme ones? Or the older green ones?

thanks

nickb

Yeah the black/green...this one:

http://www.tennis-warehouse.com/descpageRCWILSON-NPO.html

They are very popluar in my area...all the top coaches/juniors are using them..

thats the one i thought it would be.....

i think i am in a similar situation to you, as much as i like my current racket (330g unstrung + leather), after nearly 3 months i still cant "find" my serve. pace hasnt dropped much but spin and consistency arent as good as they have been using rackets such as dunlop mfil 300. will definetely check out this racket.....

thanks

EDIT: did you order from TW?

nickb
03-23-2008, 10:51 AM
I got from them from one the UK websites...they are around 80...if I do switch I will get more from the US.

They really are stable for the light weight...they are great on serve.

Yeah...I find it underpowered, tinny and too flexy.

I use this racket too! (i now have 2 of them).

I'm a 17 yr old highschool player. I would self rate at probably a 4.5.

Since i don't play all year, i cant really handle a real heavy racket as im not always in great tennis shape (im an athlete, but i cant constantly keep my shoulder ready to go on serves etc.).

I used to play with the lm rad, but i always seemed to lack some spin and depth. I triend the PD line, but hated the feel. I demoed the npro because it had similar specs, and it turned out that i loved it!

My only complaint is that i cant really hammer serves, but i am very consistant (a trade off i guess).

Overall, the racket is a great fit for me- something control(ish) oriented, but still with enough juice to keep rallies deep against strong players.

if you are looking for an 11ish oz racket, definitely try this one!

Nevermind, my fault

Interesting choice... among somewhat tweener racquets I really liked this one... much much much better than a PD...

However I still prefered the old nPro with an 18x18 pattern... much better control, and although the beam was "only" 23mm it had decent power.

On the buttcap, does it say china on it above the "W"

03-23-2008, 03:43 PM
Nick how was the npro?

nickb
03-23-2008, 03:50 PM
Great did a load of drills like "spanish", volley to volley, S and V, return of serve, deep ball-short ball-volley-smash and a basket of smashes.

Racket is great...my review still stands. Great power, super fast around the court and big spin from the baseline. I really enjoyed the hit...will be playing again 2moro and then some baskets/doubles on tuesday. Im looking foreward to getting mine in the right gripsize.

Are you permanently switching? or havnt you decided yet?
Im looking forward to trying this out, hopefully get a cheap deal off the bay

nickb
03-23-2008, 03:53 PM
Also I will be puting some lead tape on mine when I get them...around 5 grams on the head and 10g in the handle.

Nick

03-23-2008, 03:56 PM
Never used lead, like stock rackets.

However if i get one i might use a bit, does it ruin the racket if you take it off?

nickb
03-23-2008, 03:57 PM
No it can be moved around on the frame..its just got a sticky backing.

Ps..Dont buy a frame just bacause I like it!...our games will be very different...you might hate it.

Nick

I was looking at it before as well as the Speedport Tour. Now your opinion confirms its good, its had Good reviews, i might just buy both

1012007
03-23-2008, 04:02 PM
Also whats the diff between this and the nblade?

nickb
03-23-2008, 04:03 PM
I used to have an Nblade but it was so long ago I cant really remember what it was like. However I do remember that I hated it!

Nick

1012007
03-23-2008, 04:05 PM
But the nblade kind of basically discounted all the ncodes apart from feds racket

Are you stringing it as we speak? Are you going to have a quick hit with it before you give it back to him?

nickb
03-23-2008, 04:17 PM
No..stringing it in morning. Will be using it monday and tuesday before it goes back to him!

I used to play with the nPro (yellow) and one cracked where the throat meets the head. Wilson sent me the nPro open (black, green), so now I play with these. I like the 16 x 19 pattern better b/c it gives more bite. I play doubles exclusively and like it for my level 4.0-4.5.

Now I'm trying to figure out which string to stick with for this racquet. I started with Lux fluoro and really liked it, but I started getting tennis elbow. I currently am using hybrids of BA 17 mains/VS gut crosses and SPPP 1.18 mains/VS gut crosses. I think I'm going to give a Blue Gear hybrid a try next b/c I'm not getting the same bite as I did with Lux.

BigApple

Great review Nick!

When I tried this racquet I did not think much of it. I added some lead and strung it up with Luxilon Big Banger ALU Power 16L, and did it come to life! I could actually hit volleys with a polyester! I find strings perform different in different racquets, and its best to try out a variety of strings when making the switch!

BTW, I'm coming to england in May for business. Whereabouts do you live in England? Let's knock around for a bit!

nickb - a tweener wielder now?... NO WAY?!...

Seriously though. 2 Q's:

Just wondered quite why the N95 didn't quite do it for you ultimately? (I remember you saying before you used it for about a year or something.) Plus also, how is this NPro Open for a baseliner's game? (Sorry. The frame's totally unknown to me.)

Probably because the N95 is even harder to swing fast than his fischers ?? :)

Odin,

I didn't know the N95 was that log-like?

Nick,

And another Q... Surely there's another top notch Wilson frame with a lot of the qualities you require that's nearer to the 12oz mark?

Ross

Haha...ive not made the switch yet!...just trying it out :)

The nsix-one 95 was just too slow around the court for me..which is why I went to the fischers. The N95 is a fantastic racket but when playing against top players it made me feel slow. The fischers are better but im still not gettign the head speed I need...plus I feel like im putting too much effort into the shot im getting if you see what I mean.

The NPro is great for a baseliner...thats who its designed for. Spin is fantastic, very quick around the court and pretty stable for the lighter weight. With some lead tape its a serious weapon..

Nick,

The N95 swings pretty heavy...I play at least 3 hours a day..sometimes over 6!..see why I need a lighter racket now?! :)

I will be leading the NPro up to at least 11.8oz...I just need something faster around the court. I have a full western grip which means im finding it hard to swing the heavy racket fast to get decent spin.

I might go back to my fischers yet...its happened many times before!

Nick, everyone,

Sorry. Slightly off topic but...

1. Which swings slower and heavier to you - PSC 6.1 or the N95? And are we talking marginally or by a lot?

2. Also, getting away from the 1st few legendary Pro Staffs, the 6.1's, and excluding the NPro, which other Wilson frames off the top of your head do you recommend to a b-liner? (Apologies but NPro, NCode, Hammer, Hyper Hammer and all those numerous frames with numbers like the 5. 0, the 6.5, the 7.2, and who knows what, means very little to such a relative newcomer to the Wilson brand as myself... Hmmm... I feel a thread coming on!)

Cheers

1) The PSC swings heavier...not by that much.

2) Not many...the K90 but thats very demanding. Most of them are light and powerful...the 6.1 is your best bet if you want heavy.

Had another 3 hour hit with the NPro Open today.

Played a coach at his club on fast indoor carpet (LTA 4.1). Lost the match 3-6 7-5 2-6 but played great....last time we played I got beat 6-0 6-2 so im pleased with today!

So far so good...I played around 80% S and V. This style works really well on the carpet...lots of aces and easy put aways. The racket feels like it could be better on volleys..cant wait to put some lead on mine when I get them wednesday.

Tomorrow I will be playing 3 sets of doubles so can get in some more volley practice and see how it is for doubles play.

Not going to change my signature just yet...but I think it will be changed by thursday :)

Im in Leeds....always up for a hit!...sure we can set something up. You can email me by clicking on my user name.

Nick

Hey Nick,

I added 15 grams to the handle, and 6 grams to 3 and 9. ALU Power would be too stiff in stock form. The heavier weight really helps the plow through, dampens the stiff vibrations from the poly!

I would start by adding 10 grams to the handle, and 5 to 3 and 9. You can always change it if you don't like it, but that seems like a good place to start. I got pushed around against big hitters with the stock Npro Open.

I liked the NPro Open's the first couple days of hitting with them. Better than the PD and PDR I was demoing at the same time. Then all of a sudden, I couldn't hit anything with the NPro and loved the Babolats.

I still don't really understand why my preferences switched... I've got one more day on my demos, though. We'll see what today brings.

Did 1 hour of baskets, 3 sets of singles and 4 sets of doubles today. Have to say im am getting loads more spin at the baseline, kick/pace on serve and feel less tired after hard play.

Cant wait for my parcel to come in the morning...:)

When I have strung up my new frame im heading out for 2 singles matches back to back :)

I added lead to the handles for a little more stability. The nPros still have the PWS, so I figured I didn't need any lead on the head itself.

I've tried full SPPP 1.18 and it felt good, but not as much bite as Lux.

OK...I just leaded the frame up...I used unique lead tape which is 1/2g per 4".

Handle: 10g

http://img247.imageshack.us/img247/654/handle1yy0.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

I then just put some electric tape on to stop lead coming off:

http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/3975/handle2cq7.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

I added 4g in the upper hoop:

http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/8651/p3260097bu2.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

So it should be around 329g strung...bit more with full poly. I just put the regular "true" grip that came with the frame back on with a white overgrip.

Properly - around once a week, though I play a lot more in school holidays when I go down to Devon (I work in schools.) Playing around - I do regularly knock about say 2 or 3 times a week for maybe an hour at a time in settings like after-school clubs... it vaguely allows me to feel I'm keeping up with some, albeit pretty, pretty low, level of practice (the children I'm playing with are actually primary school age... and I tell you this, Nick, right now... they're going to be in for a tremendous shock this afternoon when I unleash upon them a certain, heavilly customized rod I've already named The Beast of Fischer!... )

What does it play like with the SPPP?

nickb
03-26-2008, 11:28 AM
Just got back from playing...played from 1pm to 630! haha.

This is really strange...I HATED the lead. After the first few shots I just wanted to take it off. The frame felt sluggish!...it was like hitting with my fischers again.

It took off 2 grames from the hoop...still hated it. Then took off all the lead in the hoop..hated it. Played with just the 10g on the handle...horrible!

Just took it all off within 5 minuts..what a waste of time :(

When lead was off I started to hit well again...played awesome all afternoon :)

I really really like this frame STOCK to my suprise..

String setup worked well...tension was spot on. Think I will stick with SPPP.

Also how come you dont go for the 1.18 SPPP as im sure durability wont be that bigga issue

nickb
03-26-2008, 01:37 PM
Either SPPP or Cyberflash....im waiting for a new reel of cyber..

I dont really like the 1.18...it just feels strange to me...I could never get the spin I wanted with it  + it feels mushy!...not a clue why..

Durability is not a big issue but the 1.18 breaks pretty fast....yesterday I popped luxilon ace 18g in 3 hrs play.

Out of 10, 10 being high how stiff is CF and SPPP?

Also what gauge do you normally like your polys

Nick,

Just wondered how you came by this frame... reading up on it?... word of mouth?... just happened to have a hit with a mates NPro?... something to do with your work?... the reason I ask is simply, out of all the numerous, relatively light, Wilson frames, you've chosen this one... why?

Just used a mates NPro in a squad...liked it but just went back to fischers each time. Then realised that I could whip the racket for twice as much spin...hit serves 10mph faster and get around the net quicker made me want to use it for a longer test.

I have used nearly every light wilson including the older npro..the K team, N team etc etc...never really liked any of of them except for the NPro.

Most of the rackets I have owned have been wilsons...my first decent racket was a wilson..I used the Nsix-one tour 90 for a year...the N95 for close to a year then switched to the PS85...then to the K90.

Going slightly off topic here (SORRY) - would you Nick (or anyone) recommend one of these relatively light Wilson rods - namely, the HPS 6.5. I regularly see it advertised on the auction site. It's thought by many to be Tsonga's real racket. I mean, it has 'Pro Staff' in its name?! It must be good?!

The HPS is a good racket...I know a few very very good players that use it.

At the end of the day heavy rackets are great but I think with the modern game (pace, spin, endurance) lighter rackets work just as well.

Just look at the female pro's specs...there are some top players use 265g rackets (yes they are women but they would smack us off the court!)

http://www.nickbondtennis.co.uk/tennisprosgear.htm

I think alot of it comes from this board...I have read so much about lighter rackets being pushed around, being crap at net etc that I just ignored them. My NPro is fine against 120mph serves...I volley really well with it...touch is not a problem. All in our heads?

My 2 coaches (one got to top 20 ATP juniors and the other top 500 ATP singles) play with a 250g babolat and a 289g wilson. Some of the touch shots and volleys they play defy imagination!

I think you make a very interesting and indeed valid point. However, like with caffeine, cigarettes, chocolate, chilli peppers and indeed tennis rackets - what about the addiction?!... Full job of 1.20 @ 58 mains 62 crosses. I break it in around 6-8 hours play.

CyberPower is soft but will vibrate more/transmit more shock than a synthetic...

Most club players dont ever break strings...PSGD is durable for a syn gut.

I would NEVER string poly unless:

Well i broke PSGD within 3 hours and i strung it right. Well i strung 1 guys racket with PSGD and he hits with heavy topspin so we'll see how long it lasts. The only people who break strings is when they play against me a lot as i use heavy heavy topspin so unless i play against them their strings are fine:) I broke a guys 2 rackets in 2 sets when playing against him

I also have an nPro Open, and I love it. What are the best strings to use, though? I need to change my strings, but I'm not sure which ones to use.

Great review on the NPro Open nickb! I too used the NPro Open, though I just bought a KPro Open. Have you had a chance to hit with the KPro Open yet? I'd be interested to hear what you think about the differences between the two.

I found (IMHO) that even though the specs are pretty much the same the KPro had a more solid feel on all strokes compared to the NPro, and for some reason I could genereate more topspin with the KPro. Other than that it played pretty much like the NPro.

Would be interested to hear Nick's and other ppl's views on how these 2 compare... "more solid feel"?... "more topspin"?... I might just have to do a bit of research on this KPro.

And while we're at it, as well as the KPro Open, what about it's slightly bigger brother - KPro Tour?

http://www.tennis-warehouse.com/descpageRCWILSON-KPT95.html

Anyone familiar with these rods? I'd be keen to hear comparisons between the KPro Open, KPro Tour and the NPro Open.

nickb

From the specs it looks like the KPro Open is less stiff, a tiny bit lighter and has a thinner beam in places. I will hit with it for sure but I like the NPro Open because it packs at punch for a light racket because of the stiffness/beam. I also dont like the paintjob on the K...

Hi,

I have been asking my hitting partners/coach the same thing....they tell me my ball is coming over with more spin and just as heavy. I think the extra spin im hitting makes up for the lack of mass.

Prince Synthetic Gut or something like that, not quite sure. Since I'm still a n00b when it comes to strings and such, I just played with the racquet the way it came, which was those Prince strings at about 58 lbs. Really want/need new strings, though.

Prince Syn Gut is a good string...perfect for most players..

haha...granny rackets are the way to go!

How are you? Playing much tennis?

Nick 8-)

Yeah... getting 3-4 in a week on good weeks. Typically Wed night dubs, tuesday and thurs Cardio, and then a session or two on the weekends of singles. One of the coaches here played for Indiana U. and played futures... he and I have had a few good hits.

Andreas back in the swing?

Sounds like you like the new sticks... I'm moving back to the PDR - at least for a while... we'll see.:)

Yeah andreas is back...he's working in Liverpool now so we just play doubles sunday morning every week.

I really like the NPro Open...the lighter weight means its much quicker around the court and at net....im hitting so much more spin right now!

Good luck with the PDR...I think you play best with that one :)

How cheap do wilsons normally go? Will they ever sell the old ncodes at $70-$90 like Head LM Radical and Dunlop Mfils?

It seems like a good budget racquet if they drop the price from $130.

I will but i just asked him see what he could do and no better than the shops so its hows its cheap. I dont really want to fork out 80 on a un-demoed racket. I might just buy it but also thinking of the SP tour. The wilson does look good but why hasnt it really taken off unlike the nblade and n6.1?

Not on the boards or at my clubs.
Is is quite powerful or is it more spin oriented? If i bought a 4 3/8 one and didnt like it would you be interested in it? or wouldnt you like to destroy the balance with a heat sleeve

Its powerful and spin friendly...

I would only be interested if it was 1/2 grip.

Dont buy a racket just because I like it!!

By the time you pay for them to be shipped out, paid for and then post back its going to be like 20 for 1 racket

P*W*P do one where you pay for the racket and they send you a used one...if you dont like it just send it back...if you like it they will replace it for a new racket.

Nick,

Now you've been playing with it a little while and haven't switched from it (nearly an entire week I believe! :)), just some random Q's for you, if I may...

. How do you find the biggish 100 head size?
. How do you find the N Pro for plow and 'heavy ball'?
. How do you find it for stability?
. How good would you say the aspect of control really is?
. Which other frames might it be similar to or slightly remind you of?
. What are its most obvious failings?

Cheers

Ross

Topspin CyberPower lasts less than 3 hrs play in the NPro...
