Aside from jumprope to help stay lighter on my feet, what other footwork drills should I work on so that my movement is smoother, quieter, and more agile? I'm one of those stompers on the court when it comes to anything involving several intense strides - like running down a lob, dropshot, or sharp angled shot.

Believe it or not, my footspeed and all came from hacky sack. Don't know if that'll work with anyone else, but it did for me! :D

My footspeed and agility came from 11 years of soccer.

Plyometrics, and maybe try running barefoot to make sure you're being anatomically correct with your running form on court. I find that the stronger your legs are, the more lightly and quickly you'll move on court, and, ironically, that more explosive players are usually lighter on their feet than the ones that seem to take forever to get to the ball.

TennisProdigy: funny you bring that up, as I recently returned to the soccer world after 4 years off. I find it funny that all the tennis players that are out there have better footwork than the soccer players that have been playing for a decade :) (this is on a HS team)

I never did any drill specifics, but basketball has always helped me with my agility and footspeed.

ladders really help and does lines....not running them, skipping in and out of them. there are a bunch of drills to increase footwork.

i find that having someone feed up and back consecutively will help also. You could also move left to right with feeds to ensure you are working on lateral footwork. Don't forget to focus on crossing over your feet when moving left to right on that first step.

That's different from my school. ALL the tennis players except for boys and girls 1 and 2 singles are slow and lazy as ever. I doubt my tennis team will ever win a match because the doubles teams are so lazy. On the flip side, during the soccer season which I didn't play on this year because I was playing tennis, they ended the season 12-3 I think.

While I don't like lurching around with heavy feet, there is nothing wrong with stomping imho. Might help intimidate your opponents :p
