I am able to purchase a bunch of synthetic gut string that might be as old as 20 years. They are all in the plastic and look o.k. Do strings breakdown or something if they have been in storage for a long time?

From my personal experience, it's worth less than zero. You spend your time stringing it up and it breaks after about ten minutes of play.

If it's in the original packages, it might have some value as a collector's item.
Sometimes you see some being sold like that on e bay.

I've strung 50 yr old natural gut with no problems. 20 yr old synthetic, if stored out of heat and direct sunlight, should be ok--unless you're stringing it in the 65-70# range.

I don't think I'd buy string that was that old and put it in a customer's racquet.
