Using modern equipment, I vote for Rafa. Using wood, I vote for Borg. Any thoughts? Anyone for Laver?

The "Greatest Of All Time", using modern racquets custom designed to be used with high-tech polys and modern swings, in other words the greatest of all time since 2000 or so?

LOL.

Borg is the clay GOAT, and Nadal can't sniff his jock. (Though I'm sure he'd like to.)

We've had a ton of similar threads, it's pretty hypothetical to be honest. Nadal might have been even better with wood. We'll just never know. But I have to say Nadal simply because of his Clay Court streak and the fact he's kept Federer's French Open Title Hopes at bay thus far.

Bjorn Borg right now. If Nadal wins the French Open this year, he'll be in the same category as Borg. If he wins it again next year, he'll be the undisputed GOAT clay court player in my book.

Using modern equipment, I vote for Rafa. Using wood, I vote for Borg. Any thoughts? Anyone for Laver?

Dirt is dirt. When comparing people you have to take into account that you can never do it exactly 100% correct because you should take into account things like the strenght of the competition and for this one and many similar factors - subjective opinion is the closest thing to objective reality. We can not tell for sure who had the better competition ( ELO ranking is good but not good enough ). Because of this I assume competiton was the same so I give my vote to Borg by a virtue of him winning 6 titles compared to Rafael's 3. Rafael is still very much active player so this comparison is even more pointless given that he is only 21. Borg who had the shortest career of all great tennis players played until 26. Nadal can surpass him in years to come.

Things being as they are: Borg

Kuerten had the potential but his body did not live up to it.

Borg. There is only one GOAT, not two.

Björn Borg. 6 French Opens, double of anyone else in the Open era.

Rafael Nadal. 81 straight wins and will eventually surpass Borg's record of 6 French Open.

Then Guga is the COAT, not GOAT.

Rafael Nadal. 81 straight wins and will eventually surpass Borg's record of 6 French Open.

When Nadal surpasses Borg with more than 6 FO titles, then he will be the GOAT on clay. Until then it is Borg.

Precisely. I could claim myself to be the GOAT on clay because I am GOING to win 10 straight in the future. Rafa is the greatest in the world, but not the greatest ever. Borg definitely takes it.

Borg never had a point in his career where he dominated as much as Nadal has these last 3 years. Soon to be 4 years.

Men. Close call between borg and Rafa...but Rafa has a long career ahead of him and time will tell which of the two acheive more

Women- Evert, no question about it

For now Borg is still GOAT...

Rafa's dominance on clay is impressive...
He has to win more 3 RG...after that...no doubt about the greatest clay courter of all time..

Longevity is everything. McEnroe had the greatest year a player has ever had, but no one is calling him the GOAT because of it. If Nadal retired today, there is no way you could make the argument that he was the great clayer ever.

must be wonderful for the Nadal fans to see a thread with the words GOAT and Nadal. And Nadal can never be GOAT since his nr 1 French title contender Roger Federer is such a horrible tennisplayer. Right Nadalfreak?

2 kuerten
3 Nadal

Using modern equipment, I vote for Rafa. Using wood, I vote for Borg. Any thoughts? Anyone for Laver?Equipment is irrelevant; just like the 'strength of opponent' excuses the Sampras jock snifferers use. You play the guy the tournament director tells you to with legal equipment. Period.

Björn Borg. 6 French Opens, double of anyone else in the Open era.For now.

Rafael Nadal. 81 straight wins and will eventually surpass Borg's record of 6 French Open.I agree. Borg should be shining up the proverbial 'Clay GOAT' trophy - expect a ceremony for the handoff somewhere around 2012. If his knees hold out I don't see anyone challenging Rafa. Fed might clip him (I hope) once - but Rafa should win 4 or 5 more easily if healthy. In addition to having more freakishly good overall spring clay seasons.

Kuerten is no way ahead of Rafa. He won it 3 times as well and didn't do it in 3 consecutive years. Also he lost many matches on clay. I can respect others picking Borg over Nadal for now but not Kuerten.

Chris Evert with 7 French Opens AND 125 win streak on clay. Clay was meant for 2HBHers (Evert, Borg, Nadal, Wilander) to dominate. End of discussion. :)

Man some people just want to pencil Nadals name on the win sheet for every clay tournament for the next 3 years. He does have to actually WIN these matches. To be totally honest, with the way he's taping up his knees these days I would be shocked if he won 3 more French Opens.

Delusional fanboy.

Borg won two Roland Garros titles not even losing a set.

Nadal is a dominant player, but he's not even at Cochet's level nor at Rosewall's level, let alone Borg's.
